Chapter 10: The Secret My Father Hid

I stared at the name written in my mother’s handwriting.

My father.

For several seconds, I convinced myself I had read it wrong.

The letters blurred.

The ink seemed to move.

Because there was no possible way.

Not him.

Not the man who had held my hand through every difficult moment.

Not the man who had walked into that ballroom and stood between me and the people who hurt me.

“Sarah.””

My father’s voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

His expression was unreadable.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Just tired.

Like he had been carrying a secret for years.

“Tell me this isn’t true.””

The ballroom became silent.

Everyone was watching.

But I only saw him.

My father.

The person I had trusted more than anyone.

He took a slow breath.

“Your mother was wrong about one thing.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“She thought protecting you meant keeping you away from the truth.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“So she was right?””

He looked down.

That small movement hurt more than any confession.

“Dad.””

He didn’t answer.

My voice shook.

“Were you the one giving Daniel information?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

I searched his face.

“Then why did Mom write your name?””

He looked at the letter.

Then at me.

“Because your mother didn’t know everything.””

Olivia stepped closer.

“Richard.””

My father looked at her.

“Not now.””

“No,” Olivia said softly.

“Now is exactly when.””

I turned between them.

“What is happening?””

My father closed his eyes.

Then he walked toward a quiet corner of the ballroom.

“Sarah, there are things about your family you never knew.””

I followed him.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I needed answers.

“How long?””

He looked at me.

“How long what?””

“How long did you know Daniel was using me?””

His face changed.

“I suspected.””

The word hit me.

“You suspected?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me marry him?””

My father looked devastated.

“I thought I could protect you.””

I laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Daniel.

My father.

Everyone.

Protect.

Protect.

Protect.

But somehow I was always the last person to know the truth.

“I’m not a child.””

“I know.””

“Then why did everyone make decisions about my life without me?””

My father had no answer.

That was the answer.

Olivia stepped forward.

“Sarah, your mother and father were investigating the Mercer family before you married Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“They knew the Mercer company had financial problems.””

My father nodded.

“But your mother believed Daniel himself wasn’t the only threat.””

I looked at the letter.

“Because of the betrayal.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she write your name?””

My father looked toward the executives.

Then lowered his voice.

“Because she discovered I had made a deal.””

My heart stopped.

“What kind of deal?””

He hesitated.

“A deal with Thomas.””

The room spun.

“Your brother?””

He nodded.

“Years ago, before your mother died.””

I stared.

“What did you do?””

My father looked away.

“I gave him access to information.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought I could control him.””

I felt sick.

The same excuse.

Everyone thought they could control people.

Daniel.

Evelyn.

Thomas.

And now my father.

“But you couldn’t.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“I couldn’t.””

A phone rang.

Everyone turned.

It was Claire.

She looked at the screen.

Then at me.

“Sarah.””

“What?””

She swallowed.

“This is from the company’s legal department.””

My father frowned.

“Why would they contact her?””

Claire looked nervous.

“Because they found another document.””

She handed me the phone.

Attached was a scanned file.

The title made my heart stop.

*Emergency Transfer Agreement.*

My name was on it.

Again.

I looked at Daniel.

Then my father.

“Who signed this?””

Claire looked down.

“That’s the problem.””

“What problem?””

She hesitated.

“The signature belongs to your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Claire nodded.

“That’s why we need to understand it.””

My father reached for the phone.

I pulled it away.

“No.””

He stopped.

“This involves me.””

I stared at him.

“Everything involves me.””

The words were sharper than I intended.

But they were true.

For years, people had moved pieces around a board.

And I had been the piece.

Not anymore.

I opened the file.

At the bottom was another name.

A witness.

A person who had verified the agreement.

I read it once.

Then again.

And my blood turned cold.

Because the witness wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t Evelyn.

It wasn’t Thomas.

It was someone I had never suspected.

May you like

Someone who had been standing beside me all night.

Vanessa.
