Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Secret

Nobody moved.

The ballroom felt frozen.

Daniel’s assistant, Vanessa, stood near the entrance with one hand covering her mouth.

The wedding ring in her other hand reflected the chandelier lights.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked at Vanessa.

And that single glance told me everything.

Not the truth.

Not the details.

But enough.

Enough to know there was a story between them.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

He immediately stepped forward.

“Sarah, it’s not what you think.””

I looked at him.

“Do you even hear yourself anymore?””

His face tightened.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn’t want this.””

Everyone heard her.

Daniel turned sharply.

“Vanessa, leave.””

She looked hurt.

“You said she would never find out.””

The room exploded with whispers.

My father’s expression became colder.

Evelyn looked at Daniel like she was seeing him for the first time.

“You told me there was no one else.””

Daniel’s jaw clenched.

“Mother, not now.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

Even now, even after everything, he was worried about timing.

Not what he had done.

Not what he had destroyed.

Timing.

I walked toward Vanessa.

She looked nervous.

“Sarah…”

“Tell me.””

She looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

“Don’t.””

I stopped.

That one word told me she knew something important.

“Tell me,” I repeated.

Vanessa swallowed.

“I was supposed to become the new director of operations after…”

She stopped.

“After what?””

Her eyes dropped.

“After you were removed.””

My chest tightened.

Daniel had planned everything.

The company.

The divorce.

The replacement.

My father stepped forward.

“Did Daniel tell you Sarah would have no claim?””

Vanessa looked embarrassed.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice rose.

“Enough.””

For the first time, he sounded desperate.

Not angry.

Desperate.

“Sarah, please. Let me explain.””

I turned to him.

“Explain what?””

He ran a hand through his hair.

“That things changed.””

I stared.

“What changed?””

“You changed.””

The answer was so unexpected I almost didn’t react.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

He looked frustrated.

“You became distant. You stopped understanding the pressure I was under.””

I looked around the ballroom.

“At what point did you tell me you were unhappy?””

Silence.

“At what point did you ask for help?””

Nothing.

“At what point did you decide humiliating me was easier than talking to me?””

Daniel looked away.

Because there was no answer that made him look better.

My father walked toward the executives.

“I want everyone here to understand something.””

The room quieted.

“Sarah was never a burden on this company.””

He held up a document.

“She was one of the reasons it survived.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What?””

My father looked at me.

“Your grandfather’s trust invested in Mercer Industries before Daniel became CEO.””

I stared.

“I didn’t know.””

“I know.””

He turned back.

“Because Daniel made sure you didn’t.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Claire, the CFO, stepped forward again.

“No, Daniel.””

Her voice was quiet.

“But it’s true.””

Everyone looked at her.

She continued.

“The original funding agreement lists Sarah’s trust as a controlling investor.””

I felt dizzy.

A controlling investor.

The phrase didn’t sound like it belonged to me.

I was just Sarah.

The woman who packed Daniel’s lunches.

The woman who remembered his mother’s birthday.

The woman who thought love meant standing beside someone no matter what.

But Daniel didn’t see me that way.

He saw an obstacle.

A signature.

A problem to remove.

Evelyn looked furious.

“You’re saying she owns part of this company?””

My father answered.

“I’m saying she always did.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“This is insane.””

“No,” I said quietly.

Everyone looked at me.

I looked at my husband.

“This is the first honest thing that has happened tonight.””

His expression changed.

Maybe because he realized something.

I wasn’t crying anymore.

I wasn’t begging.

I wasn’t asking him to choose me.

I had already made my choice.

My father touched my shoulder.

“Sarah, there’s one more document.””

I looked at him.

“What now?””

He handed me another folder.

“This one was delivered to me yesterday.””

My stomach dropped.

“Yesterday?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked toward Daniel.

“Because Daniel wasn’t just planning a divorce.””

I opened the folder.

Inside was a letter.

A resignation letter.

Signed by Daniel Mercer.

I looked at him.

“You were leaving the company?””

He didn’t answer.

My father’s voice was quiet.

“He was planning to sell his shares and disappear.””

The room went silent.

Then Daniel finally spoke.

“You don’t understand.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I closed the folder.

“I think I understand everything now.””

But then my father pointed at the final page.

“There’s something else.””

I looked down.

A name appeared at the bottom.

A name I knew.

May you like

A name that made my blood run cold.

Because Daniel wasn’t working alone.
