Chapter 3: The Name on the Papers

I stared at the document in my hands.

For a moment, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

My name.

My signature.

My company.

Daniel noticed the confusion on my face.

“Sarah?””

I looked up.

His voice sounded different now.

Less confident.

More afraid.

“What is this?””

My father answered before Daniel could.

“Something your husband should have told you years ago.””

The ballroom felt smaller.

Everyone was still there.

Watching.

Listening.

But somehow, all I could see was Daniel.

The man I had shared a home with.

The man who knew my favorite coffee order.

The man who held my hand during my mother’s funeral.

The man who had just watched me be humiliated.

“What is my name doing on Mercer Industries documents?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Your father is making this more complicated than it is.””

My father looked at him.

“Interesting choice of words.””

Daniel ignored him.

“Sarah, this isn’t what you think.””

I laughed quietly.

I couldn’t help it.

“Daniel, I don’t even know what I think anymore.””

Evelyn suddenly looked angry again.

“Richard, you have no right to interfere in our family.””

My father turned to her.

“You keep saying family like it gives you permission to destroy people.””

Her face tightened.

The executives nearby shifted uncomfortably.

I looked down at the papers again.

The first page showed a corporate agreement.

The second showed ownership information.

The third showed a signature.

Mine.

But I didn’t remember signing anything like this.

“Dad,” I whispered, “what is this?””

He came closer.

“Do you remember three years ago when Mercer Industries was struggling with a major expansion?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Yes,” I said slowly.

“Daniel told me he needed help.””

My father nodded.

“He told you he needed an investment.””

I looked at Daniel.

“He said it was temporary.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“He didn’t tell you the entire truth.””

Daniel’s voice rose.

“Richard, enough.””

“No.””

My father’s calm voice cut through the room.

“Your daughter deserves the truth.””

Daniel looked around.

“You’re embarrassing me.””

I stared at him.

The irony almost made me smile.

“Now you care about embarrassment?””

He looked away.

That hurt more than if he had yelled.

My father continued.

“Three years ago, Daniel came to me privately.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Richard.””

“He said Mercer Industries needed capital to survive a difficult period.””

My father looked at me.

“I agreed to help.””

I looked at the papers.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Daniel asked me not to.””

I turned toward my husband.

“You asked my father to hide something from me?””

Daniel’s silence answered.

My chest tightened.

The man I loved had been building walls around me while pretending he was protecting me.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You’re twisting this.””

My father looked at her.

“No. I’m explaining it.””

She pointed at me.

“Sarah was never involved in business. She doesn’t understand these matters.””

Something inside me snapped.

Because that sentence was familiar.

Not just from Evelyn.

From Daniel.

Every time I had asked questions about the company.

Every time I wanted to understand where the money went.

“You always said I wouldn’t understand,” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

“Sarah—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made me feel stupid for asking.””

“That’s not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?””

He had no answer.

My father took another folder.

“This is the part they hoped you would never discover.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

My father looked at him.

“Why?””

Because for the first time, Daniel wasn’t angry.

He was scared.

My fingers tightened around the papers.

“What’s in the folder?””

My father handed it to me.

“Open it.””

I did.

The first page was an internal company report.

The second was a financial agreement.

The third was a transfer record.

And then I saw it.

A date.

A signature.

A transaction.

My own name appeared beside a number so large my eyes struggled to process it.

I looked at Daniel.

“What did you do?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His face was pale.

“Sarah, I can explain.””

The entire ballroom waited.

Even Evelyn looked uncertain now.

I stepped closer.

“You used my name?””

He swallowed.

“It was supposed to be temporary.””

“For what?””

Silence.

Then my father said quietly:

“To take control of the company your husband thought he owned.””

Daniel’s expression collapsed.

“That’s not true.””

My father looked toward the executives.

“Ask them.””

Slowly, one by one, several executives lowered their eyes.

And I realized something.

They weren’t shocked.

They already knew.

My husband’s entire company had been hiding a secret.

But the biggest secret was still waiting.

Because as I turned the final page of the folder, I saw a handwritten note attached to the bottom.

A note signed by Daniel.

And it began with three words that made my blood run cold:

“After the divorce…”
