Chapter 2: The Man They Forgot About
My father never raised his voice.
That was what made people afraid of him.
Growing up, I had seen him negotiate million-dollar deals without changing his expression. I had watched executives twice his age sit straighter when he entered a room.
But I had never seen him walk into a room looking like he did that night.
Like someone had hurt his daughter.
Like he had already decided what came next.
“Dad,” I whispered.
He reached me and immediately looked at my face.
Not my dress.
Not the crowd.
Not the stage.
My cheek.
His jaw tightened.
“Who did that?””
I opened my mouth.
Before I could answer, Evelyn stepped forward.
“Well,” she said with a forced smile, “this is unexpected.””
My father turned slowly.
“Evelyn Mercer.””
Her confidence shifted.
Just slightly.
“Richard.””
The room became even quieter.
Daniel walked toward us.
“Mr. Bennett, I think there’s been a misunderstanding.””
My father looked at him.
“Don’t call me Mr. Bennett.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Sir—”
“You watched my daughter get slapped.””
No one spoke.
Daniel looked around.
A hundred people were watching him now.
For the first time that night, he looked uncomfortable.
“My mother was upset.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“That is not an answer.””
Evelyn crossed her arms.
“Richard, this is a family matter.””
My father looked at her.
“A family matter?””
He glanced at my cheek.
“Your family struck my daughter in front of your employees.””
Evelyn scoffed.
“She disrespected me.””
My father’s expression didn’t change.
“How?””
“She embarrassed me.””
“How?””
Evelyn opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because suddenly, with everyone listening, the story sounded different.
Not like a mother defending her son.
Like a powerful woman trying to justify hurting someone weaker.
Daniel stepped between them.
“Can we please handle this privately?””
My father laughed once.
It wasn’t amusement.
It was disbelief.
“Private?””
He looked around.
“Your mother chose a ballroom.””
The words landed hard.
I noticed people avoiding Daniel’s eyes.
Some employees who had laughed earlier were now staring at the floor.
My father placed a hand gently on my shoulder.
“Are you okay?””
I nodded.
But I wasn’t.
Not really.
Because the worst part wasn’t Evelyn.
It was Daniel.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
The question came out quieter than I expected.
Everyone heard it anyway.
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
“Why did you smile?””
His face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
The hesitation.
“I didn’t know what to do.””
I stared at him.
“That’s a lie.””
His eyes hardened.
“Sarah.””
“No.””
My voice shook, but I didn’t stop.
“You knew exactly what to do. You just didn’t want to do it.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You’re being dramatic.””
My father looked at her.
“My daughter was slapped.””
“And she provoked me.””
The entire room froze.
My father turned to me.
Then back to Evelyn.
“She admitted it.””
Daniel immediately interrupted.
“Mom, stop.””
It was the first time all night he sounded nervous.
But it wasn’t because he cared about me.
It was because he realized his mother had said too much.
My father reached into his jacket pocket and removed his phone.
“Sarah, I need you to answer one question.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Did Daniel know this was going to happen?””
My heart stopped.
I looked at my husband.
Daniel’s expression changed.
Just enough.
A tiny flash of fear.
Then he looked away.
And that was my answer.
“Daniel,” I said.
He didn’t respond.
“Did you know?””
“Sarah, you’re misunderstanding.””
My father’s voice became colder.
“Answer her.””
Daniel looked at the crowd.
Then at his mother.
Then finally at me.
“I knew my mother wanted to talk to you.””
My stomach dropped.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know she would slap you.””
“But you knew she planned to humiliate me.””
Silence.
That silence said everything.
My father closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, he looked calm again.
Too calm.
“Then we have a larger problem.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
My father didn’t answer him.
Instead, he turned toward the executives standing near the entrance.
Several of them looked nervous.
One older man stepped forward.
“Richard, we should discuss this.””
My father nodded.
“Yes. We should.””
Daniel looked between them.
“Why are you talking to my executives?””
My father stared at him.
“Because you seem to have forgotten something.””
“What?””
My father smiled faintly.
A smile that looked nothing like Daniel’s.
“I didn’t come here as Sarah’s father.””
Daniel went still.
The ballroom doors opened again.
Another group of people entered carrying black folders.
Evelyn’s face changed.
For the first time that night, she looked afraid.
Daniel looked at my father.
“What did you do?””
My father picked up one of the folders.
Then he handed it to me.
“Sarah, open it.””
My hands shook as I looked at the first page.
And the name printed at the top made my entire body go cold.
Because it wasn’t Daniel’s name.
May you like
It wasn’t Evelyn’s.
It was mine.
