Chapter 6: The Secret Michael Never Knew
I stared at the message for almost a full minute.
My first instinct was to delete it.
Because I didn’t want another mystery.
I didn’t want another accusation.
I wanted my normal life back.
But I couldn’t ignore one thing.
The message mentioned Michael’s father.
A man who had died before I ever met him.
A man nobody in the family liked to talk about.
That evening, I found Michael sitting alone at the kitchen table.
The same kitchen where everything had started.
He looked exhausted.
When he saw me, he stood.
“Sarah.””
I didn’t sit down.
“Who was your father?””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“Your father. What happened between him and your mother?””
Michael looked confused.
“Why are you asking that?””
“Because someone just told me your mother has been hiding something for twenty years.””
His face hardened.
“Who told you that?””
“That doesn’t matter.””
“It does matter.””
“No, Michael. What matters is why everyone keeps hiding things from me.””
He looked away.
That was enough.
“You know something.””
He sighed.
“I know my parents had problems.””
“What kind of problems?””
Michael sat down.
“My father wanted to leave.””
The words landed heavily.
“Leave your mother?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Michael rubbed his hands together.
“He said she wasn’t the person everyone thought she was.””
My heart sank.
“What happened?””
“He died before he could explain.””
The kitchen went quiet.
“Did anyone investigate?””
Michael looked uncomfortable.
“Sarah…”
“What?””
“You have to understand. I was young.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked down.
“My mother said he was sick. She said he became paranoid.””
I stared at him.
“And you believed her?””
Michael didn’t respond.
A painful realization hit me.
This was bigger than a stolen ring.
Linda had spent years controlling the story.
Controlling what people believed.
Then suddenly, Michael’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“It’s my aunt.””
He answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through the speaker.
Michael’s eyes widened.
“Wait… what?””
I watched him slowly stand.
“What did you say?””
A few seconds passed.
Then he looked at me.
“Sarah…”
“What?””
“My aunt found something.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
Michael swallowed.
“She found the original version of my father’s will.””
I stepped closer.
“And?””
His face turned pale.
“She said your name is on it.””
I froze.
“My name?””
He nodded slowly.
“She said my father left something to you.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“Michael, I never met your father.””
He stared at me.
“That’s why this doesn’t make sense.””
Before either of us could say another word, the front door slammed open.
Linda stood there.
Her face was filled with panic.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Fear.
“Who told you about the will?””
Michael turned toward her.
“Mom…”
Linda looked at me.
Then at Michael.
And for the first time in my life…
My mother-in-law looked terrified.
Because she knew something we didn’t.
Something hidden inside that will.
Something that could destroy everything she had built.

And then she whispered:
“Sarah was never supposed to inherit anything.””
