Chapter 3: The Secret in the Drawer

The police were never called.

Not because Linda admitted what she did.

She didn’t.

Instead, Michael convinced everyone to wait until we understood what was really happening.

But the damage was already done.

Something had changed in that room.

The person who had been treated like a thief was standing in front of the people who were supposed to be family.

And the person who caused it all was still pretending to be the victim.

The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the empty space beside me.

Michael had slept on the couch.

Not because he was angry.

Because he didn’t know what to say.

That hurt almost more.

A soft knock came from the bedroom door.

“Sarah?””

I didn’t answer.

A few seconds passed.

Then Michael opened the door.

“I know you’re upset.””

I looked at him.

“Upset?””

My voice was quiet.

“I was dragged across the house. Accused of stealing. My things were thrown on the floor.””

He lowered his head.

“I know.””

“No, Michael. You don’t.””

He sat down carefully.

“I should have stopped her.””

“Yes.””

The honesty in my answer made him flinch.

“I should have believed you.””

“Yes.””

He rubbed his face.

“I don’t know how to fix this.””

I looked away.

“Neither do I.””

Before he could respond, we heard shouting downstairs.

Linda.

“You have no right to search my room!””

Michael and I exchanged a look.

Then we walked downstairs.

The family was gathered near the hallway.

Emily stood beside Sophie.

Linda was blocking the stairs.

“What’s going on?”” Michael asked.

Sophie looked nervous.

“Dad checked the camera again.””

Linda’s face tightened.

“Michael, tell them.””

He looked at his mother.

“Why were you in Sarah’s room?””

Silence.

A terrible silence.

Linda crossed her arms.

“I was looking for the ring.””

“That doesn’t explain opening her drawer.””

Linda looked away.

And that was the answer.

Michael stepped closer.

“Mom.””

She sighed.

“You wouldn’t understand.””

“Try me.””

Linda’s expression changed.

“You married someone who keeps secrets from you.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Linda looked directly at me.

“I found something in your drawer.””

I felt a chill.

“What?””

She smiled slightly.

And I knew immediately.

Whatever she had found…

She wanted everyone to see.

Linda reached into her purse and pulled out a small envelope.

Michael stared.

“Where did you get that?””

“I told you. I found it.””

My hands went cold.

The envelope had my name written across the front.

But I had never seen it before.

Linda held it up.

“Maybe now everyone will understand who Sarah really is.””

Michael looked at me.

I looked at the envelope.

Then Linda slowly opened it.

And the moment she pulled out the paper inside…

May you like

I realized she hadn’t been trying to frame me for a stolen ring.

The ring was only the beginning.
