Chapter 4: The Letter She Wanted Everyone to See

The paper trembled slightly between Linda’s fingers.

Everyone was staring at it.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t even breathe properly.

Because somehow, that envelope with my name on it felt more dangerous than the diamond ring lying on the coffee table the night before.

Michael stepped closer.

“What is that?””

Linda looked at him with a satisfied expression.

“Something your wife didn’t want you to know.””

My stomach tightened.

“That’s not mine.””

Linda laughed softly.

“Of course you’d say that.””

She unfolded the paper slowly, making sure everyone had time to watch.

Emily looked uncomfortable.

“Mom, just read it.””

Linda glanced at her daughter.

“You’ll understand soon.””

Then she looked down.

“The letter says…”

She paused dramatically.

“She was planning to leave.””

Michael froze.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

Linda continued.

“She wrote about finding a new apartment. She wrote about wanting a fresh start.””

“That doesn’t mean anything,” I said.

Linda ignored me.

“She was preparing to walk away from this marriage.””

Michael looked at me.

His eyes were filled with confusion.

“Sarah?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know what she’s talking about.””

Linda held the paper out.

“Read it yourself.””

Michael took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

I watched every emotion cross his face.

Confusion.

Pain.

Doubt.

Then anger.

But not at Linda.

At me.

“Is this true?””

My chest tightened.

“I have never seen that letter before.””

Michael looked back at the page.

“But it has your handwriting.””

That made me stop.

Because he was right.

The handwriting looked like mine.

The way the letters curved.

The way I crossed my T’s.

The way I wrote my name.

It looked exactly like something I would write.

Emily whispered, “Sarah…”

I looked around the room.

Everyone was watching me.

Again.

Just like yesterday.

Except this time, there was no ring.

No camera.

No obvious proof that I had been set up.

Only a piece of paper that looked like it belonged to me.

Linda smiled.

“Tell them the truth.””

I stared at her.

“You forged this.””

Her smile disappeared.

“You’re accusing me?””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Linda stepped closer.

“You think I would fake my own son’s marriage falling apart?””

I looked directly into her eyes.

“I think you would do anything to get what you want.””

Michael ran a hand through his hair.

“Enough.””

I turned toward him.

“Do you believe me?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That pause hurt.

Again.

Then Sophie spoke.

“Uncle Michael.””

Everyone looked at her.

The twelve-year-old girl stood near the stairs, holding her tablet.

“I think you should check something.””

Linda’s expression changed.

“Sophie, stop interfering.””

But Sophie didn’t move.

“There’s something wrong with the letter.””

Michael frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Sophie walked closer.

“I saw Grandma yesterday before she came downstairs.””

Linda’s face hardened.

“What are you saying?””

Sophie swallowed.

“I saw her at the desk in the guest room.””

My heart started racing.

“The guest room?””

Sophie nodded.

“She was using Aunt Sarah’s old notebook.””

Linda immediately interrupted.

“She’s confused.””

“No,” Sophie said quietly.

“She’s not.””

Everyone stared at Sophie.

She opened the tablet.

“I took a picture because I thought Grandma was doing something strange.””

Michael looked at the screen.

Then his expression changed.

The room went silent.

Because the photo showed Linda sitting at the desk.

And beside her…

Was my notebook.

The same notebook where I kept personal thoughts.

The same notebook where I wrote letters I never sent.

Michael looked at his mother.

“Why did you have Sarah’s notebook?””

Linda opened her mouth.

But no words came out.

May you like

For the first time…

She looked afraid.
