Chapter 2: The Person Everyone Trusted
Nobody spoke.
The only sound in the room was the quiet hum of the television in the corner.
Michael kept staring at the tablet.
His face had lost all color.
“Play it again,” he whispered.
Sophie nodded and replayed the footage.
This time, everyone watched carefully.
The camera showed the living room empty.
Then Linda walked into the room.
She wasn’t searching.
She wasn’t panicking.
She was calm.
Too calm.
She walked directly toward the coffee table, opened her purse, and looked around.
Then she removed something from inside.
A small velvet box.
Emily gasped.
“No way.””
Linda’s expression changed.
“Stop the video.””
Nobody moved.
Michael continued watching.
The footage showed Linda opening the box.
Inside was the diamond ring.
The same ring she had accused me of stealing.
My mouth opened, but no words came out.
Linda had planted it.
She had put the ring in my purse.
Then she waited.
She created the entire scene.
Michael slowly lowered the tablet.
“Mom…”
Linda immediately stepped forward.
“This doesn’t prove anything.””
Everyone stared at her.
Emily blinked.
“What do you mean it doesn’t prove anything?””
Linda pointed at the tablet.
“That camera angle doesn’t show why I had the ring.””
I almost laughed.
Almost.
Because somehow, even after being caught, she was still trying to escape.
“You put it in my purse,” I said quietly.
Linda turned toward me.
“Don’t act innocent.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
The question surprised her.
“Why would you do this?””
Her face hardened.
“You want to know why?””
Michael stepped between us.
“Mom, answer her.””
Linda looked at him.
For the first time, she seemed angry at him instead of me.
“You married her three years ago and suddenly this house isn’t ours anymore.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You changed after meeting Sarah.””
I stared at her.
“That’s what this is about?””
Linda shook her head.
“She took you away from this family.””
Michael looked shocked.
“Mom, that’s not true.””
But Linda wasn’t finished.
“She made you stop listening to us. She made you choose her.””
I felt a strange emptiness.
All this time, I thought Linda hated me because I wasn’t good enough.
Because I cooked differently.
Because I didn’t agree with every opinion she had.
Because I wanted boundaries.
But this wasn’t about a ring.
It was about control.
Emily suddenly looked uncomfortable.
“Mom… you went too far.””
Linda turned toward her daughter.
“Don’t start.””
“No,” Emily said softly.
“You actually did.””
The room became even quieter.
Michael looked back at me.
“Sarah…”
I stepped away.
“Don’t.””
His expression fell.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t believe me.””
“I was confused.””
“You watched your mother humiliate me.””
Michael opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because he knew I was right.
Sophie slowly walked toward me.
“Aunt Sarah?””
I looked at her.
She held the tablet against her chest.
“I’m sorry Grandma did that.””
I forced a small smile.
“Thank you for showing the video.””
Sophie hesitated.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone turned.
Michael frowned.
“What else?””
Sophie looked at Linda.
Then at the tablet.
“I didn’t just see Grandma put the ring in your purse.””
Linda’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Sophie pressed her lips together.
“She was looking for something else.””
A cold feeling moved through my chest.
“What something else?””
Sophie looked down at the screen.
“She opened your bedroom drawer first.””
The room went completely still.
Michael’s voice lowered.
“Mom…”
But Linda didn’t answer.
Because everyone had just realized something.
The ring wasn’t the only thing she had planted.

And whatever she had been searching for upstairs…
Was something she never wanted me to find.
