Chapter 10: The Hidden Message From My Mother

I stared at the old cabinet near the hallway.

For years, I had walked past it.

Opened it.

Cleaned around it.

Never once wondering what secrets might be hidden inside.

Now everyone was looking at it like it contained the answer to everything.

“My mother hid something there?”” I asked.

Rachel nodded slowly.

“She told your mother’s closest friend that she left a clue.””

I frowned.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Rachel looked away.

“Because nobody knew if you were safe.””

The words made my chest tighten.

“Safe from who?””

Nobody answered.

Not even Michael.

And that scared me.

I turned toward him.

“Did you know about any of this?””

He shook his head immediately.

“No.””

“But your family did.””

His silence was painful.

Not because he agreed.

Because he didn’t know how to defend himself anymore.

Linda suddenly stepped forward.

“This has gone too far.””

I looked at her.

“You’re right.””

She seemed surprised.

“This went too far the moment you dragged me into this room and called me a thief.””

Her expression hardened.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

My voice rose.

“You planted evidence.””

Nobody spoke.

Linda looked away.

For the first time, she couldn’t pretend.

Michael walked toward the cabinet.

“Let’s find out what’s inside.””

Linda blocked him.

“No.””

Everyone froze.

Michael stared at her.

“Move.””

She didn’t.

“Michael, please.””

That word shocked me.

Linda never begged.

Not once.

“What are you afraid we’ll find?”” Michael asked.

Her eyes moved toward the cabinet.

Then she whispered:

“You don’t understand what your father was trying to do.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Then explain.””

She looked at him.

“He wasn’t saving people.””

Rachel immediately stood.

“That’s a lie.””

Linda turned.

“You weren’t there.””

“No. But I saw what happened after.””

The room became tense.

I looked between them.

“What happened after?””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“After your father disappeared, Linda took control of everything.””

Michael stared at his mother.

“Disappeared?””

His voice cracked.

“You just said he died.””

Linda looked frozen.

Nobody moved.

Then Michael whispered:

“You lied about that too?””

The pain on his face was impossible to watch.

Linda looked at him.

“I was protecting you.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

That sentence broke something.

Linda stepped back.

And Michael opened the cabinet.

Inside were old books, family records, and dusty boxes.

Nothing.

For a moment, everyone looked disappointed.

Then I noticed something.

A small wooden panel at the back.

I stepped closer.

“Wait.””

Michael turned.

“What?””

I pointed.

“That wasn’t there before.””

He moved the items aside.

Behind the panel was a small compartment.

Inside was an envelope.

My name was written on it.

Sarah.

My hands started shaking.

I reached for it.

The paper felt old.

Fragile.

Like it had waited years for me.

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

My mother’s handwriting.

I knew it immediately.

My eyes filled with tears.

*Sarah, if you are reading this, it means the truth finally found you.*

I covered my mouth.

Michael stood beside me.

“What does it say?””

I kept reading.

*I wanted to tell you everything. I wanted to protect you. But some secrets are dangerous when the wrong people know them.*

My hands trembled.

The next line made my heart stop.

*Linda knows what happened. She always has.*

Everyone looked at Linda.

She closed her eyes.

I continued.

*The evidence is not in this house. It was never safe here.*

A strange feeling moved through me.

Then I reached the final sentence.

And my entire body went cold.

*Sarah, trust the person who saved your life once before. Not the family who took everything from you.*

I looked up.

“Saved my life?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael noticed something at the bottom of the page.

A name.

A name written underneath my mother’s signature.

May you like

He whispered:

“Karen.””
