Chapter 5: The Truth Behind the Handwriting

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

The silence felt heavier than any argument.

Michael held Sophie’s tablet in one hand and the fake letter in the other.

He looked between them.

“Mom.””

Linda crossed her arms.

“This is ridiculous.””

“No,” Michael said.

His voice was different.

Calmer.

More serious.

“This is the second time Sarah has been accused of something she didn’t do.””

Linda’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re taking her side?””

Michael looked at me.

Then back at his mother.

“I’m trying to understand what happened.””

That sentence should have comforted me.

But it didn’t.

Because I realized something.

Michael still needed evidence before he trusted me.

After everything.

I walked away from the group.

“Sarah,” he called.

I stopped.

But I didn’t turn around.

“I need some space.””

Then I went upstairs.

For the first time since marrying Michael, I felt like a stranger inside my own home.

A few minutes later, there was another knock.

Not Michael.

Sophie.

“Can I come in?””

I opened the door.

She stepped inside quietly.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t do anything wrong.””

She looked down.

“I should have said something sooner.””

I sat on the edge of the bed.

“What did you see?””

Sophie hesitated.

“Grandma has been acting strange for months.””

My eyes lifted.

“What do you mean?””

“She asks questions about your things.””

“What things?””

“Your documents. Your jewelry. Your personal stuff.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

Sophie looked toward the hallway.

“Because I think she’s looking for something.””

“Something like what?””

Sophie lowered her voice.

“I don’t know.””

Before I could ask more, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Is this Sarah?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Karen. I worked with Michael’s father years ago.””

I frowned.

“Why are you calling me?””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“Because I think you’re being framed.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What?””

“I saw what happened yesterday. My niece was visiting your mother-in-law’s neighborhood and told me about the accusation.””

I stood up.

“How do you know Linda?””

Another pause.

“Because I know what she’s capable of.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Who are you?””

“My husband was Linda’s business partner.””

The room felt colder.

“And?””

Karen’s voice became quieter.

“Linda has done this before.””

I froze.

“Done what?””

“She destroys people when they get too close to the truth.””

I looked toward the bedroom door.

“What truth?””

Karen sighed.

“I don’t know everything. But years ago, Linda was involved with a family trust.””

I swallowed.

“A trust?””

“Yes.””

“What does that have to do with me?””

Karen was silent.

Then she said:

“Sarah, before Michael married you, did anyone ever tell you about his grandmother’s inheritance?””

My blood ran cold.

“No.””

“That’s because you weren’t supposed to know.””

I sat down slowly.

“What inheritance?””

Karen whispered:

“The one your husband’s family lost because of a secret hidden twenty years ago.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Why are you telling me this?””

“Because I found something that belongs to you.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

A long pause.

Then Karen said:

“A document with your name on it.””

I looked at the fake letter sitting downstairs in Linda’s hand.

Another document.

Another trap.

Another secret.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

But before Karen could answer…

The call suddenly ended.

And when I looked at my phone screen…

May you like

I saw a message from the same unknown number.

*Don’t trust Michael until you know what his mother did to his father.*
