Chapter 12: The Enemy Inside the House

Michael reached my room seconds after me.

He stopped at the doorway.

His face changed.

“What happened?””

I pointed at the pillow.

He read the message.

His expression turned into anger.

Not confusion.

Not doubt.

Anger.

“Mom.””

He immediately walked out.

I followed.

For the first time, I wasn’t trying to prove myself.

I didn’t need to.

The truth was standing in front of him.

Linda was in the living room.

Holding a cup of coffee.

Almost calmly.

Like nothing had happened.

Michael walked in.

“Did you go into Sarah’s room?””

Linda looked up.

“No.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

Her expression changed.

“I’m your mother.””

“And she’s my wife.””

The words surprised everyone.

Linda stared at him.

“You’re choosing her?””

Michael shook his head.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

That was the first time I saw fear in Linda’s eyes.

Real fear.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Then tell me.””

She looked away.

“Some things are better left buried.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Like my mother’s evidence?””

Linda looked at me.

“You think you know everything.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I know enough.””

The room became silent.

Then Linda said something I never expected.

“I didn’t put the ring in your purse because I hated you.””

Everyone froze.

Michael stared.

“Then why?””

Linda looked at me.

“Because I needed to know if you had found the documents.””

My blood went cold.

“What documents?””

She didn’t answer.

Because she had already said too much.

Rachel whispered:

“The evidence.””

Linda closed her eyes.

Michael looked devastated.

“You framed my wife to search her belongings?””

“I was desperate.””

“You destroyed her reputation.””

“I was protecting you.””

“No.””

Michael shook his head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Linda looked at him.

And for a moment, she looked like a completely different person.

Not the confident woman who controlled the family.

Just someone terrified of losing everything.

Then she reached into her pocket.

And placed something on the table.

A small key.

Everyone stared.

“What is that?”” Michael asked.

Linda looked at me.

“Your mother gave this to me.””

My heart stopped.

“She trusted you?””

Linda nodded slowly.

“She trusted me once.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Linda pushed the key toward me.

“But she was wrong.””

I looked at the key.

“What does it open?””

Linda’s eyes filled with something I couldn’t understand.

Regret.

Fear.

Maybe guilt.

“A safety deposit box.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Where?””

Linda looked at him.

“At the bank.””

“Why didn’t you open it?””

Her voice became quiet.

“Because I was afraid of what was inside.””

I picked up the key.

It was cold against my fingers.

A piece of my mother’s past.

A piece of the truth.

Then my phone buzzed.

Another message.

From Karen.

I opened it.

And my heart stopped.

*Sarah, don’t open the box. Linda is lying. She didn’t give you the key because she regrets what she did.*

A second message appeared.

*She gave you the key because she knows what happens when you see what’s inside.*

I looked at Linda.

She was watching me.

Waiting.

And suddenly I realized something terrifying.

May you like

The key wasn’t the end of the mystery.

It was the next trap.
