Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
Daniel left my office twenty minutes later.
Not because he wanted to.
Because he realized I was no longer listening.
He tried everything.
Anger.
Guilt.
Promises.
Nothing worked.
“You’re destroying our marriage over a misunderstanding,” he said.
A misunderstanding.
That was his favorite word.
A word that made betrayal sound accidental.
I watched him walk out of the room.
Then I locked the door.
My hands were shaking.
Not from fear.
From the realization that the man I had built my life around had been living another life beside me.
I called Madison back.
She answered after one ring.
“I didn’t think you’d call.””
“Start talking.””
Her breathing was heavy.
“I know you hate me.””
“I don’t have time for this.””
“Fair.””
There was a pause.
Then she said:
“Daniel didn’t hire me because I was good at my job.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“He hired me because of my father.””
I sat down.
“Who is your father?””
“Thomas Blake.””
The name sounded familiar.
I searched my memory.
Then I remembered.
Daniel had mentioned him years ago.
A business partner.
Someone who disappeared suddenly.
“What happened to him?””
Madison’s voice became quieter.
“He discovered Daniel was moving company money.””
I looked at the folder.
“Your father found out?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“He tried to report it.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did Daniel do?””
Madison didn’t answer immediately.
That silence scared me.
“He blamed my father.””
“For what?””
“For financial fraud.””
I stared at the wall.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Her voice cracked.
“My father lost everything. His reputation. His company. His friends.””
I closed my eyes.
“And you?””
“I needed proof.””
The pieces started connecting.
Madison didn’t come into my life because she wanted Daniel.
She came because she was searching.
But that didn’t excuse what she did.
“You still hurt me.””
“I know.””
“You humiliated me in my own home.””
“I know.””
“Then why should I believe you?””
Her answer came immediately.
“Because Daniel just tried to erase everything.””
I looked at my desk.
“What do you mean?””
“The real documents.””
I froze.
“What about them?””
“He knows you have them.””
“Yes.””
“He’s going to take them.””
I looked toward the locked door.
“How?””
Madison hesitated.
“Sarah, Daniel has access to your accounts.””
My blood ran cold.
“He doesn’t have my passwords.””
“He doesn’t need them.””
I stood.
“What are you saying?””
“He opened a backup access account three months ago.””
I felt sick.
“He had control?””
“Yes.””
I walked to my desk.
The folder was still there.
Except something was wrong.
The papers were slightly moved.
I knew exactly how I left them.
I always organized documents by date.
Someone had touched them.
Someone had been inside my office.
“Madison.””
“Yes?””
“Daniel was just here.””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“Sarah, leave the house.””
I looked toward the door.
“Why?””
“Because if he knows you have proof, he won’t wait.””
My heart raced.
“What are you saying?””
Before she answered, the lights in my office flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then went dark.
I heard a sound outside.
A quiet click.
Like someone unlocking a door.
I held my breath.
“Madison?””
No response.
The call had dropped.
I slowly moved toward the office door.
My hand touched the handle.
Then I heard Daniel’s voice from the other side.
“Sarah.””
I froze.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Open the door.””
I stepped back.
“How did you get in?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because this is still my house.””
I looked at the folder.
The documents.
The evidence.
Everything suddenly felt fragile.

Then Daniel said something that made my blood turn cold.
“You really should have looked closer at the document before you took it.””
