Chapter 3: The Secret Behind His Betrayal
I sat alone in my office while the sound of the party disappearing outside felt like a different world.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
For years, this room had been my escape.
The place where I handled bills.
Planned vacations.
Saved old photos.
Built the life I thought I had with Daniel.
Now it was where I kept the truth.
I opened the folder again.
Inside were copies of financial documents, emails, and records I had collected over the last month.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed proof.
The first thing I noticed was money missing from our joint investment account.
Not a small amount.
A pattern.
Transfers made late at night.
Amounts just under the reporting limits.
Money moved through companies I didn’t recognize.
I heard footsteps outside my door.
I quickly closed the folder.
Daniel appeared.
His shirt was still damp from the pool water that had splashed when I fell.
For a moment, he looked like the man I married.
Then I remembered what he had done.
“Are you happy now?”” he asked.
I stared at him.
“Happy?””
“Yes.””
He walked inside.
“You ruined my company party.””
I almost couldn’t believe him.
“You’re worried about the party?””
“I’m worried about my reputation.””
There it was.
Not my feelings.
Not my injury.
His reputation.
I stood up.
“Daniel, you pushed your wife into a pool.””
His jaw tightened.
“You attacked Madison.””
“After she provoked me.””
“She was upset.””
I laughed.
“She was upset?””
I pointed toward the folder.
“Do you even know what I found?””
His eyes moved to it.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
“You went through my things?””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I followed the trail you left behind.””
His expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
I opened the folder and pulled out a bank statement.
“Three months ago, you moved forty thousand dollars from our account.””
He went silent.
Then he recovered.
“It was for business.””
“Then why hide it?””
“It wasn’t hidden.””
“Daniel.””
My voice became cold.
“Don’t insult me.””
He looked away.
That tiny movement confirmed everything.
“You knew,” he whispered.
“I knew enough.””
He walked toward the desk.
“You have no idea what you’re looking at.””
“Then explain it.””
He didn’t.
Instead, he said something I never expected.
“You should have just trusted me.””
I stared at him.
“Trust isn’t a blindfold, Daniel.””
His face hardened.
“You always make everything difficult.””
I felt my chest tighten.
Because I remembered hearing that sentence before.
Every time I questioned him.
Every time I asked why he was late.
Every time I wanted answers.
I was always the problem.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Madison.
He immediately declined the call.
But a second later, a message appeared.
I saw it.
So did he.
*She knows about the account. We need to move tonight.*
The room went silent.
Daniel grabbed his phone.
“It’s not what you think.””
I looked at him.
“Then what is it?””
He had no answer.
The confidence disappeared from his face.
For the first time, Daniel looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not annoyed.
Afraid.
I walked toward him slowly.
“Who is Rachel?””
His eyes widened.
That was all the answer I needed.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
I held up my hand.
“You don’t get to explain after everything.””
He stepped closer.
“I can fix this.””
I smiled.
“You keep saying that.””
“What?””
“That you can fix everything.””
I looked at the folder.
“But you never say you’re sorry.””
His phone buzzed again.
This time, he didn’t look.
I did.
Another message.
From Madison.
And only six words appeared on the screen.
*She found the real document. Run now.*
I looked at Daniel.
Then at the folder on my desk.
Because suddenly I understood.
The affair wasn’t the biggest betrayal.
Madison wasn’t trying to steal my husband.
She was trying to help him hide something much bigger.

And whatever was inside that document…
was the reason Daniel had been willing to destroy me in front of everyone.
