Chapter 2: The Message Madison Tried to Hide

Nobody moved.

The entire backyard felt frozen.

Madison noticed where I was looking.

Her smile disappeared.

“Give me that.””

She rushed toward the table.

But she was too late.

I had already seen the preview.

*Sarah knows. Daniel handled it. Don’t let her talk.*

My heart stopped.

Not because of the message itself.

Because of one word.

*Handled.*

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

That was the moment something inside me finally broke.

For years, I had defended him.

When people said he worked too much, I told them he was building our future.

When friends noticed he stopped taking me on dates, I said we were just busy.

When he came home smelling like someone else’s perfume, I convinced myself there had to be another explanation.

But standing there in front of everyone, I realized I had been protecting a man who wasn’t protecting me.

Madison grabbed her phone.

“You’re twisting this.””

I looked at her.

“Am I?””

She swallowed.

Daniel stepped between us.

“Sarah, stop.””

I laughed quietly.

“Stop what?””

“Making a scene.””

I looked around the yard.

“Making a scene?””

My voice rose.

“You pushed me into a pool in front of forty people because your secretary insulted me, and I’m the one making a scene?””

Nobody spoke.

Some of Daniel’s employees looked uncomfortable.

Others looked away.

Because they had seen everything.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“We will discuss this at home.””

“No.””

He frowned.

“What?””

I climbed out of the pool completely.

“I’m done discussing things in private while you rewrite what happened.””

Madison crossed her arms.

“You attacked me first.””

I turned toward her.

“You walked into my house and insulted my marriage.””

She laughed.

“You threw a drink at me.””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“Because I was tired of watching you pretend you were innocent.””

Her face tightened.

For the first time that night, Madison looked nervous.

Daniel noticed.

“Enough.””

That one word told me everything.

He wasn’t angry because I was wrong.

He was angry because I was exposing them.

I picked up Madison’s phone from the table before she could stop me.

She reached for it.

“Give that back.””

I held it away.

“What are you afraid I’ll find?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Sarah.””

His voice was a warning.

But I opened the message.

There were dozens of notifications.

I didn’t need to read them all.

The first few lines were enough.

Madison had been sending messages to someone named Rachel.

*She almost found the account.*

*Daniel says she won’t leave.*

*We need to make sure she looks unstable.*

My fingers went numb.

“Unstable?””

I looked at Daniel.

“You were planning this?””

“No.””

His answer came too fast.

That made it worse.

Madison stepped forward.

“You don’t understand.””

I smiled sadly.

“You’re right.””

I looked at both of them.

“I don’t understand how I spent eight years loving someone who could stand there and let this happen.””

Daniel’s face softened for half a second.

Maybe guilt.

Maybe fear.

Then it disappeared.

“You need to calm down.””

I stared at him.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The way you talk to me when you think I’m the problem.””

The crowd began slowly leaving.

The party was over.

But the damage had already happened.

Daniel grabbed my arm again.

This time, several people noticed.

“Come inside.””

I pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Sarah.””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“You don’t get to hurt me and then act like you’re the one in control.””

Madison stepped beside him.

A small movement.

But a clear one.

They stood together.

Not separately.

Together.

And suddenly, every late night.

Every excuse.

Every missing piece.

Made sense.

I walked toward the house.

Behind me, Daniel called my name.

I didn’t turn around.

Because for the first time in years, I wasn’t afraid of losing him.

I was afraid of what else he had taken from me.

Inside the house, I went straight to my office.

There was one thing I had never told Daniel.

One thing I had discovered before I ever found his messages.

I opened the locked drawer in my desk.

Inside was a folder.

The reason I had stayed quiet.

The reason I had waited.

The reason I knew Madison hadn’t come to destroy my marriage.

She had come because someone had sent her.

I opened the folder.

May you like

And the first document had a name printed across the top.

*Daniel Mercer.*
