Chapter 13: The House Full of Secrets
I returned to the house alone.
Not because I trusted Daniel.
Because I needed him to believe I did.
The agents followed at a distance.
Rebecca had placed a tracker on my phone and promised me one thing.
“If anything feels wrong, leave.””
I nodded.
But we both knew I wasn’t walking back inside because I wanted safety.
I was walking inside because I wanted answers.
The house looked exactly the same.
That was the strangest part.
The same furniture.
The same paintings.
The same family photos.
A place that had held eight years of memories now felt like a crime scene.
The front door was unlocked.
“Daniel?””
No answer.
I stepped inside.
“Where are you?””
A voice came from the living room.
“Right here.””
I turned.
Daniel stood beside the fireplace.
No anger.
No shouting.
Just exhaustion.
For a second, I saw the man I married.
Then I remembered the pool.
The lies.
The documents.
The fake marriage.
“You came alone.””
I smiled slightly.
“You sound disappointed.””
“I’m relieved.””
“Why?””
“Because I want to explain.””
I almost laughed.
“You always want to explain after the damage is done.””
His face tightened.
“Sarah, you don’t understand what your father did.””
“Stop.””
I stepped closer.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“The truth is the one thing you never gave me.””
Daniel looked away.
That tiny movement told me everything.
He knew he was losing.
“You found the recording.””
I froze.
“How do you know?””
He smiled sadly.
“Because Madison was always predictable.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did you do to her?””
“Nothing permanent.””
The way he said it made my skin crawl.
“Nothing permanent?””
“Sarah.””
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“You don’t get to talk like you’re the victim.””
He walked toward me.
Slowly.
“I loved you.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Not because I believed them.
Because part of me had spent years waiting to hear them.
I hated that.
“You loved what I represented.””
“That’s not true.””
“Then why didn’t you file our marriage?””
Silence.
That question always worked.
Because he never had an answer.
Finally, he said:
“Because I was afraid.””
I stared at him.
“Of what?””
“Losing everything.””
“You mean losing control.””
His eyes hardened.
“You don’t know what your father was capable of.””
“Then tell me.””
He looked at the floor.
“Your father knew Daniel Mercer Senior was stealing from investors.””
“Your father?””
“No.””
He looked up.
“Mine.””
I stopped.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel continued.
“My father built the company. Your father discovered what he was doing.””
“So my father exposed him?””
“No.””
His voice became softer.
“He tried to fix it.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he cared about people more than money.””
That was the first thing Daniel said that sounded real.
“My father didn’t want revenge,” he continued.
“He wanted the money returned.””
“Then why did you blame him?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because I was young.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Being young doesn’t make you steal.””
His jaw tightened.
“You have no idea what it was like.””
“I know exactly what it was like.””
I pointed toward the house.
“I trusted someone who didn’t deserve it.””
A sound came from upstairs.
A floorboard.
Daniel looked up.
Just for a second.
But I noticed.
“You’re not alone.””
His expression changed.
“Sarah.””
I moved away.
“You brought someone here.””
“No.””
“Who is upstairs?””
He didn’t answer.
I reached for my phone.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
That single word confirmed it.
I called Rebecca.
Daniel lunged.
Not at me.
At the phone.
I stepped back.
He missed.
And in that moment, the mask finally fell.
The fear.
The desperation.
The man who had spent years pretending to be untouchable was suddenly just a man terrified of being exposed.
The front door opened.
Rebecca and the agents rushed in.
Daniel froze.
Rebecca looked at him.
“Daniel Mercer.””
He said nothing.
She held up a warrant.
“We need to ask you about several financial crimes.””
Daniel looked at me.
Not angry.
Not anymore.
Betrayed.
Like I had done something wrong.
“You chose them over me.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
I looked around the house.
“At some point, Daniel, I had to choose myself.””
As agents moved toward him, his phone fell from his pocket.
The screen lit up.
A message appeared.
From Rachel.
*He found the hidden account. He knows the final beneficiary.*
Rebecca saw it.
So did I.
She picked up the phone.
“Final beneficiary?””
Daniel’s face went pale.
I looked at him.
“What haven’t you told me?””
May you like
For the first time…
Daniel had no answer.
