Chapter 11: The Man Who Built the Lie
The photo stayed on my screen.
My house.
My front gate.
My life.
Daniel had been watching.
Rebecca immediately called for backup.
“Sarah, step away from the windows.””
I didn’t move.
Not because I was brave.
Because I was exhausted.
For years, Daniel had controlled every room he entered.
Every conversation.
Every decision.
But now, for the first time, he was the one reacting.
“He’s outside,” Bennett said after checking the security cameras.
“Where?””
“Across the street.””
My stomach tightened.
“He came back?””
Rebecca nodded.
“He wants you to think he’s in control.””
I looked at the screen.
Another message appeared.
*You don’t know what you’re doing.*
I almost smiled.
That was Daniel.
Always assuming I was lost without him.
I typed a response.
Rebecca stopped me.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
I wrote:
*I know exactly what I’m doing now.*
I sent it.
The reply came instantly.
*Then you know what happens if you destroy everything.*
I stared at the words.
Not a denial.
Not an apology.
A threat.
I handed the phone to Rebecca.
“This is enough, right?””
“It helps.””
“Helps?””
She looked at me carefully.
“We still need the complete financial records.””
“The ones Madison found?””
“Yes.””
I called Madison.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
A wave of worry hit me.
“What happened to her?””
Rebecca was already contacting her team.
“We’ll find out.””
I looked around Daniel’s office.
The place suddenly felt different.
Not his office.
A crime scene.
A museum of lies.
Then I noticed something.
A photo frame on the shelf.
Daniel and me.
Our wedding day.
I picked it up.
The smile on my face looked so real.
I remembered that day.
The flowers.
The music.
The way Daniel whispered:
“Forever.””
I almost dropped the frame.
Because now I wondered if he had ever meant a single word.
“Sarah.””
I turned.
Rebecca held a document.
“We found something.””
“What?””
She handed it to me.
A company registration.
Another LLC.
Another name.
But this time, I recognized it.
*Collins Family Trust Management.*
My name.
Again.
“I never created this.””
“No.””
Rebecca pointed to the signature.
“Look closely.””
I did.
My signature.
Except it wasn’t mine.
Someone had copied it.
A perfect imitation.
“He forged my signature.””
“Yes.””
The anger returned.
Not the sadness.
The anger.
“How long?””
Rebecca looked at the date.
“Seven years.””
Seven years.
One year after our wedding.
Or what I thought was our wedding.
Daniel had spent seven years preparing.
Seven years building a trap.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Daniel.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Sarah.””
I said nothing.
“I know you’re upset.””
I laughed.
“Upset?””
“I know this looks bad.””
“Looks bad?””
“Let me explain.””
“No.””
A pause.
“Sarah.””
“You don’t get to explain anymore.””
His breathing changed.
“You think you’re being protected by those agents.””
“No.””
“Then what?””
I looked at Rebecca.
“I’m being protected by the truth.””
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
“You don’t know what your father did.””
My grip tightened.
“What?””
“He wasn’t the man you think he was.””
“Don’t use my father to excuse what you did.””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“You lied about everything.””
“No.””
His voice became harder.
“I lied because your father made sure you never knew.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
“You think he left you money?””
“Didn’t he?””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“No.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then what did he leave me?””
A pause.
Then Daniel said:
“A warning.””
The call ended.
I looked at Rebecca.
“What was that?””
She didn’t answer.
Because Bennett had just walked in.
His face was pale.
“Agent Sloan.””
Rebecca turned.
“What?””
“We found Madison.””
My heart jumped.
“Where?””
Bennett hesitated.
Then said:
“She’s at a warehouse outside the city.””
“Is she okay?””
He looked at me.
“She’s alive.””
The way he said it scared me.
“What happened?””
Bennett lowered his voice.
“Someone left her there.””
“Who?””
May you like
He looked toward the phone still in my hand.
“Daniel Mercer.””
