Chapter 12: The Last Message From Madison
The warehouse smelled like dust, metal, and rain.
I stayed behind the agents as we entered.
Rebecca told me not to come.
I ignored her.
Not because I wanted danger.
Because Madison was the only person who had helped me uncover the truth.
And despite everything she had done…
I needed to know she was alive.
We found her sitting against a wall.
Her clothes were dirty.
Her face was pale.
But she was awake.
“Sarah?””
The moment she saw me, tears filled her eyes.
I rushed forward.
Rebecca stopped me.
“Slowly.””
Madison looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t answer immediately.
There were too many emotions.
Anger.
Pain.
Confusion.
Finally, I said:
“Why did he bring you here?””
Madison looked down.
“Because I took something.””
“What?””
“The original ledger.””
Rebecca stepped closer.
“Where is it?””
Madison swallowed.
“I hid it.””
“Where?””
She looked at me.
“Somewhere Daniel would never search.””
“Where?””
Madison whispered:
“Your house.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He thought he found everything.””
Rebecca frowned.
“What did you hide?””
Madison closed her eyes.
“A recording.””
I stared at her.
“Of what?””
“The night your father died.””
The warehouse went silent.
“My father died in an accident.””
Madison looked away.
“That’s what Daniel wanted everyone to believe.””
I felt cold.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She reached into her pocket.
Slowly.
Carefully.
She pulled out a small flash drive.
“I copied it before he found me.””
Rebecca immediately took it.
“Where is the original?””
“Destroyed.””
“By who?””
Madison looked at me.
“Daniel.””
I felt the ground disappear.
“What’s on it?””
Madison’s voice shook.
“Your father confronting Daniel.””
“About the money?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
She looked toward the agents.
Then back at me.
“He admitted everything.””
Rebecca stared at the flash drive.
“This could change the entire investigation.””
Madison nodded.
“It gets worse.””
“What?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Your father wasn’t trying to expose Daniel.””
I frowned.
“Then what was he trying to do?””
“He was trying to protect you.””
My chest tightened.
“From what?””
Madison looked directly at me.
“From Daniel.””
A notification suddenly appeared on my phone.
A message.
From my home security system.
*Front door opened.*
Nobody spoke.
Then another notification arrived.
*User identified: Daniel Mercer.*
My blood ran cold.
“He’s inside my house.””
Rebecca immediately moved.
“Everyone out.””
I looked at Madison.
“How did he get in?””
She whispered:
“He still has the access code.””
“What access code?””
Her face changed.
“The one created when he built the trust.””
I looked at the agents.
Then at the screen.
Another message appeared.
This time from Daniel.
*Come home if you want the truth.*
A second message followed.
*But come alone.*
Rebecca grabbed my phone.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“He has something I need.””
“Sarah—”
“The recording.””
Rebecca’s expression hardened.
“We’ll get it.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t understand.””
I looked at Madison.
Then back at the message.
“Daniel spent eight years making me believe I was powerless.””
I took my phone back.
“But he made one mistake.””
Rebecca stared at me.
“What?””
I looked at the agents.
“I know him.””
My eyes returned to the message.
“And he still thinks I’m the same woman who married him.””
I walked toward the exit.
Behind me, Madison whispered:
“Sarah…”
I stopped.
She looked terrified.
“Don’t let him get you alone.””
I nodded.
Because she was right.
Daniel didn’t want a conversation.
He wanted control.
But as I stepped into the rain, I realized something.
The man who built the biggest lie of my life had forgotten one important detail.
I had spent eight years studying him.

And now…
he was finally going to learn who I really was. :::
