Chapter 4: The Document He Never Wanted Me to Find

I stared at the message on Daniel’s phone until the words stopped looking like words.

*She found the real document. Run now.*

Run.

Not explain.

Not apologize.

Not tell me the truth.

Run.

That single word told me more than any confession could have.

Daniel reached for his phone.

I moved it away.

“No.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Sarah, give me my phone.””

“Why?””

“Because it’s mine.””

I laughed softly.

“That’s the best you have?””

His face tightened.

“You’re acting irrational.””

I looked at him.

The same phrase.

The same strategy.

Make me emotional.

Make me look unstable.

Make everyone believe I was the problem.

But this time, I wasn’t the woman standing in the dark anymore.

I had the light.

“Tell me who Rachel is,” I said.

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Tell me why Madison told her I found the account.””

Still nothing.

“Tell me why you were planning to move money tonight.””

His silence was louder than any confession.

I placed the phone on the desk.

“You know what hurts the most?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I could understand cheating.””

His expression changed.

“Sarah—”

“No. Listen.””

My voice shook, but I didn’t stop.

“I could understand someone making a terrible choice. I could understand someone being weak.””

I pointed toward the door.

“But what I cannot understand is you building a whole plan to destroy me.””

His face hardened.

“You’re exaggerating.””

“Am I?””

I opened the folder.

The document inside was a copy of a transfer agreement.

Daniel’s name was everywhere.

But underneath his signature was another name.

*Madison Blake.*

I watched his reaction.

And I saw it.

Fear.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But real.

“What is this?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

He walked toward the folder.

I stepped back.

“Don’t.””

His voice lowered.

“Sarah, you don’t understand what you’re looking at.””

“Then explain.””

“It’s complicated.””

“Funny.””

I smiled bitterly.

“Everything becomes complicated when you get caught.””

He looked frustrated.

“This isn’t about Madison.””

“Then why is her name on this?””

No answer.

The room felt smaller.

For years, I thought Madison was the woman trying to take my husband.

But now I wondered if she was something else.

A partner.

A witness.

A person who knew exactly what Daniel was hiding.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“You need to let me handle this.””

I almost laughed.

“Handle it?””

I walked closer.

“You mean like you handled the party?””

His jaw clenched.

“That was a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

I pointed toward the backyard.

“You pushed me into a pool.””

“I didn’t mean for you to fall.””

The words left his mouth.

Then he froze.

Because he realized what he had just admitted.

I stared at him.

“You didn’t mean for me to fall?””

He looked away.

“You know what I mean.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“I don’t.””

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Daniel saw it.

“Don’t answer that.””

That stopped me.

“Why?””

He didn’t respond.

I pressed accept.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Sarah?””

I recognized it immediately.

Madison.

My grip tightened.

“How did you get my number?””

There was silence.

Then she whispered:

“Because Daniel has been using your identity for months.””

My heart dropped.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked terrified.

“Sarah,” he said.

I ignored him.

“What are you talking about?””

Madison’s breathing became uneven.

“I shouldn’t be calling you. If he finds out, I’m finished.””

“Finished?””

“Daniel doesn’t love me.””

That sentence shocked me.

“What?””

“He used me.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Hang up.””

I turned away.

Madison continued.

“He told me you would never discover the accounts. He told me everything was under control.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Then why help him?””

Another silence.

Then Madison said something I never expected.

“Because I found out what he did to my father.””

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Daniel immediately reached for the phone.

But I pulled away.

“What did you do to her father?””

His face changed.

And for the first time…

I knew the truth was much worse than an affair.
