Chapter 5: The Woman Behind The Lies
I couldn't breathe.
Not because I was shocked.
Because deep down, some part of me already knew.
The late nights.
The secret phone calls.
The sudden business trips.
All the times I asked if something was wrong.
All the times Jake kissed my forehead and said, "You're imagining things.""
I wasn't imagining.
I was being lied to.
I looked at the photograph again.
The woman beside him was smiling.
Jake's hand rested on her shoulder.
A picture of two people who looked comfortable.
Familiar.
Like this wasn't the first time they stood together.
"When was this taken?"" I asked.
Daniel looked at the paper.
"Two years ago.""
I closed my eyes.
Two years.
Half of our marriage.
"Who is she?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Her name is Rachel.""
The name felt like a stranger entering my home.
"How do you know her?""
"I don't personally.""
"Then how did you get this?""
Daniel took a breath.
"During the investigation, I found payments from one of Jake's accounts.""
"To her?""
He nodded.
I felt something inside me crack.
Not sadness.
Not anger.
Something colder.
Understanding.
"How much?""
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
"Emma.""
"How much?""
"Almost seventy thousand dollars.""
I stared at him.
The birthday party.
The pool.
The laughter.
It all replayed in my head.
Jake wasn't just careless.
He was comfortable.
Comfortable because he believed I would always stay.
I left Daniel's office before sunset.
I didn't go home.
I drove to the old coffee shop where Jake and I first met.
I don't know why.
Maybe I wanted to remember the version of him I loved.
The man who held my hand during thunderstorms.
The man who brought me soup when I was sick.
The man who once told me, "I will spend my whole life making you feel safe.""
I sat by the window for almost an hour.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Jake.
"Come home. We need to talk.""
I almost ignored it.
But I wanted answers.
When I arrived, Jake was sitting in the living room.
The lights were off.
The house felt unfamiliar.
He stood when I entered.
"Where were you?""
I placed my purse down.
"Talking to my lawyer.""
His face tightened.
"You actually went through with this.""
I stared at him.
"You tried to take my company.""
His expression changed.
Just for a second.
Fear.
Then anger.
"You don't understand what happened.""
"No, Jake. I understand perfectly.""
I held up the photograph.
His face went pale.
"Where did you get that?""
"Does it matter?""
He looked away.
That answer was enough.
"Who is she?""
Jake rubbed his forehead.
"Emma...""
"Who is she?""
He stayed silent.
And silence was the confession.
I laughed quietly.
"How long?""
He looked at me.
"How long what?""
"How long did you think I would never find out?""
His jaw tightened.
"You weren't supposed to see any of this.""
I froze.
"Any of this?""
Jake realized what he said.
Too late.
I stepped closer.
"How many secrets are there?""
He didn't answer.
Then he did something I never expected.
He cried.
Not real tears.
Not regret.
Fear.
"Emma, you don't know what you're doing.""
I stared at him.
"You keep saying that.""
"Because you don't.""
"Explain.""
He looked toward the window.
"Do you really think I stayed with you because of your money?""
The question shocked me.
Because I hadn't accused him of that.
He had.
Jake continued.
"You think this is about cheating? About paperwork?""
He stepped closer.
"This is bigger.""
I didn't move.
"What are you hiding?""
Before he could answer, someone knocked on the door.
Jake froze.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
I walked toward the entrance.
"Who is it?""
No answer.
The knocking came again.
Harder.
Jake whispered:
"Emma, don't open that door.""
I turned around.
"Why?""
His face had lost all color.
Because for the first time in three years, I saw my husband afraid of someone else.
The door shook.
Then a man's voice came from outside.
"Jake. I know you're in there.""
Jake stepped back.
May you like
And whispered:
"We're in trouble.""
