Chapter 14: The Final Betrayal
I couldn't move.
My father's face stared back at me from the photograph.
A person I barely remembered.
A person everyone told me was gone too soon.
I looked at Victoria.
"You knew my father?""
She nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because your grandfather asked me not to.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
I threw the photograph onto the table.
"Everyone decided what I could handle.""
Victoria didn't defend herself.
That made me angrier.
"You all protected me by lying to me.""
She looked down.
"You're right.""
The honesty stopped me.
She continued.
"I should have told you years ago.""
"Then tell me now.""
Victoria sat.
"Your father wasn't just your father's name.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"He was part of the original Carter Group leadership.""
I stared.
"My father worked with my grandfather?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did everyone say he was just a businessman?""
Victoria looked away.
"Because he discovered something.""
"What?""
"Someone inside the company was stealing.""
My heart slowed.
"Who?""
Victoria didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
I already knew.
The pattern was obvious.
"Melissa's family?""
"No.""
Her answer surprised me.
"Then who?""
Victoria looked directly at me.
"Someone much closer.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Who?""
She whispered:
"Your mother.""
The room went silent.
I felt like the floor disappeared.
"My mother?""
Victoria nodded.
"Your grandfather discovered financial manipulation before your father's death.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"Emma.""
"No.""
I stood.
"My mother loved my father.""
Victoria looked sad.
"People can love someone and still make terrible choices.""
I couldn't accept it.
Not another betrayal.
Not another person I loved.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Emma, we verified the records.""
I looked at him.
"You knew?""
"No.""
His answer came immediately.
"Not until today.""
I looked back at the files.
The world I knew was disappearing.
My entire life had been surrounded by secrets.
Then I found something.
A document.
My father's signature.
My grandfather's signature.
And a third signature.
I recognized it.
Because I had seen it on every birthday card.
Every family letter.
Every Christmas gift.
I whispered:
"No.""
Daniel looked.
"What?""
I pointed.
"That's impossible.""
Victoria closed her eyes.
"Emma.""
"Tell me I'm wrong.""
Nobody spoke.
Because they couldn't.
The third signature belonged to...
Melissa's father.
The same family that had been attacking me for years.
But then something didn't make sense.
I looked at Victoria.
"Why would Melissa want the company if her family already knew about it?""
Victoria's face changed.
Because she understood.
"Because Melissa doesn't know everything.""
"What does that mean?""
Victoria opened the final document.
Inside was a handwritten note from my grandfather.
I read it.
"To whoever finds this: the Carter Group was never the prize. The real asset is the information protected inside it.""
I looked up.
"Information?""
Victoria nodded.
"Your grandfather collected evidence.""
"Against who?""
She looked at me.
"Against powerful people who believed they were untouchable.""
I stared at the documents.
The company.
The inheritance.
The betrayal.
It was never about money.
It was about what my family knew.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
Unknown number.
One message.
"I know you found the files.""
Another message appeared.
"You should have stopped looking.""
My blood ran cold.
Then the final message arrived.
"You don't know who your real enemy is.""
I looked around the room.
For the first time, I wondered if Jake, Melissa, and everyone else had only been distractions.
May you like
Because the person behind everything...
had never revealed themselves.
