Chapter 4: The File Hidden Beneath My Name

Daniel's office felt colder than usual.

I had been there dozens of times over the years.

For tax meetings.

For paperwork.

For advice about buying our first house.

Back then, I never imagined I would sit in the same chair while he placed documents in front of me that could destroy my marriage.

Daniel closed the blinds before speaking.

That alone scared me.

"Emma, before I show you this, I need you to understand something.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"Everything I've done has been to protect you.""

My fingers tightened around my purse.

"Protect me from what?""

He opened a folder.

Inside was a stack of financial records.

"Jake has been moving money.""

I stared at the papers.

"What kind of money?""

"Your money.""

The room went silent.

I looked up.

"No.""

Daniel didn't react.

"Emma, I know this is difficult.""

"No. You don't understand.""

I pushed the papers back.

"Jake and I have joint accounts. We share everything.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's what he wanted you to believe.""

My chest tightened.

"What are you saying?""

He turned the first page around.

"This company account was opened six months after your marriage.""

I scanned the document.

The name on it made my stomach drop.

Not Jake.

Mine.

Emma Carter Holdings.

"I don't understand.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"When you inherited your grandfather's investment portfolio, Jake convinced you to place everything under a management company.""

I nodded slowly.

"Because he said he could grow it.""

"Exactly.""

I looked at the numbers.

Millions.

Money I had almost forgotten existed because Jake always handled the finances.

Daniel tapped the page.

"But this company was never controlled by Jake.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"It was controlled by you.""

My heartbeat increased.

"What are you talking about?""

Daniel opened another document.

"Your grandfather created a protection clause before he passed away. He knew your husband had no experience managing assets, so he created a structure where you would remain the final decision-maker.""

I stared.

"Jake knew?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Yes.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Then why did he tell me everything belonged to him?""

"Because he wanted you to believe it.""

I looked down at my hands.

Suddenly, every memory felt different.

Every time Jake said, "I built this life.""

Every time he joked, "Without me, you'd still be lost.""

Every time I thanked him for handling things.

He wasn't helping me.

He was training me not to look.

Daniel watched my expression.

"Emma, there's more.""

I looked up.

"More?""

He slid another folder toward me.

"This is why Jake came to see you.""

I opened it.

Inside was a legal notice.

A request.

A transfer request.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Jake had attempted to transfer ownership of the company.

Without my signature.

Without my approval.

Without telling me.

"He tried to steal it?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Legally, he couldn't.""

"Then why do this?""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Because he believed you would never find out.""

I closed the folder.

For years, I thought Jake underestimated my strength.

I was wrong.

He underestimated my attention.

He thought I didn't notice.

The small comments.

The missing statements.

The unusual phone calls.

The late nights.

He thought I was too busy loving him to see him.

My phone suddenly rang.

Jake.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel looked at me.

"Are you going to answer?""

I pressed accept.

"Hello?""

Jake's voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

"Emma.""

I said nothing.

"I think we need to stop fighting.""

I almost laughed.

"Fighting?""

"Yes. This has gone too far.""

I looked at Daniel.

Then back at the phone.

"You pushed me into a pool.""

"I apologized.""

"No, Jake. You explained why I was wrong to be hurt.""

Silence.

Then his voice changed.

"You talked to Daniel.""

I didn't answer.

"You shouldn't have done that.""

My grip tightened.

"Why?""

"Because now you know things you weren't supposed to know.""

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

I stood.

"What things?""

Jake didn't respond immediately.

Then he whispered:

"The things that could ruin both of us.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Daniel stood.

"Emma.""

I looked at him.

"What did he mean?""

Daniel walked toward the window.

"I was afraid this would happen.""

"What?""

He turned around slowly.

"Jake isn't just hiding financial secrets.""

My heart sank.

"What else?""

Daniel opened the final folder.

Inside was one photograph.

A woman.

Standing beside Jake.

And the date on the back was from two years earlier.

Before I ever suspected anything was wrong.

May you like

Daniel looked at me.

"Emma, I think your husband has been preparing for a divorce long before tonight.""
