Chapter 13: The Secret My Grandfather Buried

Melissa's final words stayed with me long after she left.

Ask Victoria why she was really chosen to protect you.

I hated that one sentence could make me question everything again.

For weeks, I had been uncovering secrets.

Jake's lies.

Melissa's plan.

The hidden company.

The inheritance.

Every answer had led to another question.

And now Victoria was part of the mystery.

I found her in the empty conference room after the meeting.

She was standing by the window.

Waiting.

"You knew she would say that.""

Victoria didn't turn around.

"Yes.""

My heart tightened.

"Then tell me.""

She slowly faced me.

"Tell you what?""

"Why were you chosen?""

The room became silent.

Victoria looked older suddenly.

Not weak.

Just tired.

"Because your grandfather trusted me.""

I waited.

"That's not the whole truth.""

She looked down.

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"What are you hiding?""

Victoria walked toward the table and sat down.

"When your grandfather created the protection structure, he knew there would be people who wanted to control your inheritance.""

"People like Melissa.""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't he tell me?""

Victoria's expression softened.

"Because he was afraid.""

I frowned.

"My grandfather wasn't afraid of anything.""

"He was afraid of what wealth would do to your life.""

I said nothing.

Victoria continued.

"He watched people around him change when they learned about money. Friends became competitors. Family became business partners. Love became a negotiation.""

I thought about Jake.

About Melissa.

About myself.

Victoria opened a small envelope.

"Your grandfather left this for you.""

My hands froze.

"Why didn't you give it to me before?""

"Because he instructed me to wait until you discovered betrayal on your own.""

I stared.

"That's cruel.""

"Maybe.""

She looked at the envelope.

"Or maybe he knew you would never believe him.""

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My grandfather's handwriting.

My eyes immediately filled.

"Dear Emma,

If you are reading this, it means someone you trusted has already tried to take something from you.""

I stopped.

The words felt like he was sitting beside me.

"Do not mistake kindness for weakness. The world will tell you that powerful people must become cold. I disagree.""

I continued reading.

"Your greatest strength has always been your ability to see the good in others. But remember this: forgiveness without boundaries is not love.""

I swallowed.

Victoria watched silently.

At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.

"The person who betrays you first may not be your greatest enemy.""

I looked up.

"What does that mean?""

Victoria took a breath.

"Your grandfather knew someone else would eventually come after the company.""

"Who?""

Before she could answer, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

"Daniel?""

His voice was urgent.

"Emma, you need to get here now.""

"What happened?""

"We found another account.""

My stomach tightened.

"Whose?""

A pause.

Then:

"Your grandfather's.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"It was hidden for twenty years.""

I looked at Victoria.

Her face changed.

"Where?""

Daniel answered.

"In a private trust.""

My heart raced.

"What does it contain?""

His voice lowered.

"Information about everyone involved.""

I arrived at Daniel's office thirty minutes later.

The account wasn't money.

It was records.

Documents.

Names.

Photographs.

And one file marked:

"Project Guardian.""

I opened it.

The first page had a list of names.

Jake.

Melissa.

Rachel.

And beneath them...

Victoria.

I looked up.

"Why is your name here?""

Victoria went pale.

And for the first time since I met her...

she looked afraid.

"I was hoping you would never see that.""

I turned the page.

There was a photograph attached.

A younger Victoria.

Standing beside my grandfather.

And beside them...

was another person.

Someone I recognized immediately.

My father.

A man who died when I was young.

My hands shook.

"What is this?""

May you like

Victoria whispered:

"The truth your grandfather spent his life protecting you from.""
