Chapter 11: The Woman Who Wanted Everything

The next morning, the Carter Group headquarters looked different.

Not because the building had changed.

Because I had.

For years, I walked past the glass doors believing I didn't belong there.

Now every employee looked at me differently.

Not because they knew my story.

Because they knew my name.

Victoria had arranged an emergency meeting.

The boardroom was silent when I entered.

Twenty people sat around the table.

Executives.

Lawyers.

Advisors.

People who had worked with my grandfather.

I expected them to question me.

Instead, they stood.

The oldest man in the room smiled.

"Emma Carter.""

I nodded.

"Mr. Harrison.""

He smiled.

"Your grandfather would be proud.""

Those words almost broke me.

Because my grandfather was the one person who always saw me clearly.

I sat at the head of the table.

A position I had never imagined.

Victoria placed a folder in front of me.

"We have a problem.""

I opened it.

Melissa had filed a legal challenge claiming I was unaware of the inheritance structure and therefore incapable of controlling the company.

I stared at the papers.

"She is trying to remove me.""

Victoria nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked around the table.

"Can she?""

Nobody answered immediately.

That told me everything.

"Maybe.""

The honesty surprised me.

Mr. Harrison spoke.

"Melissa has been preparing for years.""

I looked at him.

"How long?""

"Since before your wedding.""

My chest tightened.

Before my wedding.

That meant my entire marriage existed inside a plan I never saw.

Then Jake walked into the room.

Everyone looked at him.

I didn't invite him.

He knew that.

"I need to talk to Emma.""

Victoria immediately stood.

"No.""

Jake looked at me.

"Please.""

The room watched.

I nodded.

"Five minutes.""

Everyone left.

Jake stood across from me.

"I found something.""

I didn't respond.

He placed a phone on the table.

"Melissa's messages.""

I looked at the screen.

There were dozens.

Years of conversations.

My eyes moved through them.

The first one made my stomach turn.

Melissa:

"She trusts him. That's the advantage.""

Jake:

"Don't involve Emma.""

Melissa:

"You already involved her when you married her.""

I kept reading.

My hands shook.

Jake had argued with her.

He had resisted.

But then another message appeared.

Melissa:

"You need me. Without my help, your debt destroys you.""

Jake:

"What do you want?""

Melissa:

"Her company.""

I looked up.

"You knew.""

Jake looked broken.

"I knew she wanted control.""

"You knew and stayed silent.""

"I was afraid.""

I laughed quietly.

"You were afraid.""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

I stared at him.

"Do you know what I was afraid of?""

He didn't answer.

"I was afraid my husband didn't love me.""

His eyes filled.

"Emma...""

"No.""

I stood.

"You don't get to fix this with tears.""

He looked down.

"I know.""

For once, he didn't fight back.

That made it harder.

Because part of me remembered the man I married.

The man who wasn't always cruel.

The man who got lost.

But being lost didn't excuse where he ended up.

My assistant suddenly rushed into the room.

"Ms. Carter.""

I turned.

"What happened?""

She held out a tablet.

"We found something.""

I looked at the screen.

A security camera recording.

From the night of my birthday party.

The pool.

The laughter.

Jake pushing me.

But the video showed something I didn't know.

Before Jake approached me...

Melissa was standing behind him.

Whispering.

I turned up the volume.

The sound was faint.

But clear enough.

Melissa's voice.

"Do it now.""

Jake:

"Are you sure?""

Melissa:

"She needs to look weak.""

My blood froze.

This wasn't just a cruel joke.

It was a performance.

They wanted everyone watching.

They wanted witnesses.

They wanted me humiliated.

Then the video continued.

Melissa leaned closer.

And said the words that made me stop breathing.

"After tonight, she'll sign anything we put in front of her.""

I stared at the screen.

The birthday party wasn't the beginning.

May you like

It was the final step of a plan.

And I knew exactly what I had to do next.
