Chapter 3: The Man Who Underestimated Me
Jake didn't come home that night.
I expected anger.
I expected shouting.
What I didn't expect was silence.
Silence from a man who always needed an audience.
The next morning, I found an envelope sitting outside my bedroom door.
No name.
No message.
Just my name written across the front.
Emma.
My fingers tightened around it.
Inside was a photograph.
Me.
Standing outside Daniel's office.
Taken the night before.
My blood ran cold.
Behind the photo was a handwritten note.
"Be careful who you trust.""
I read it twice.
Then I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because I finally understood.
Jake wasn't hurt.
He was scared.
I called Daniel immediately.
"Did you send someone to watch me?""
"No.""
"Are you sure?""
"Emma, absolutely not.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Then someone is watching me.""
There was silence.
Then Daniel spoke carefully.
"Don't go anywhere alone today.""
That was the moment I realized this was no longer just about a pool.
It was about control.
Jake had spent years making me smaller.
Making me question myself.
Making me believe I needed him.
But now that I had stepped away, he didn't know how to handle losing power.
That afternoon, Jake showed up at my office.
He walked in wearing a perfect suit.
Calm.
Confident.
The same man everyone admired.
He closed my office door.
"We need to talk.""
I didn't look up from my papers.
"No.""
His expression changed.
"Emma.""
"You wanted a conversation when I was crying in the pool.""
He went quiet.
"I made a mistake.""
I finally looked at him.
"A mistake?""
He nodded.
"I didn't think it would upset you this much.""
I stared.
"You didn't think?""
He looked away.
That was the first honest answer he had given me.
I stood.
"Jake, do you know what hurt the most?""
He said nothing.
"Not falling into the pool.""
His eyes lifted.
"It was looking up and realizing my husband was the happiest person there.""
His face softened for a second.
Then it disappeared.
"You are overreacting.""
And just like that, the apology was gone.
I shook my head.
"You still don't understand.""
He stepped closer.
"You think Daniel can save you?""
I stayed silent.
Jake smiled.
A cold smile.
"You don't know everything.""
My stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?""
He walked toward the door.
"It means you should ask your lawyer what he knows about your husband's past.""
I watched him leave.
Ten minutes later, Daniel called.
His voice sounded different.
Serious.
"Emma, I need you to come here.""
"What happened?""
A long pause.
Then:
"I found something in Jake's records.""
I grabbed my keys.
"What?""
Daniel answered quietly.
"Something that changes everything.""
I stopped.
"What is it?""
Another pause.
May you like
Then he said:
"Emma... Jake wasn't the only one keeping secrets in this marriage.""
