Chapter 9: Vanessa’s Confession
I didn’t open the door immediately.
Vanessa stood on my front porch in the rain.
No designer dress.
No perfect makeup.
No confident smile.
Just a woman who looked terrified.
I opened the door slightly.
“What do you want?””
Her eyes filled.
“I need to tell you the truth.””
I almost closed the door.
“You’ve had nine years to do that.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared at her.
Sorry wasn’t enough.
Not after everything.
“You humiliated me.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“You wore my necklace.””
“I know.””
“You watched him hurt me.””
Her face changed.
“I never wanted that.””
“But you let it happen.””
She lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
That honesty surprised me.
She looked past me.
“Can I come in?””
I hesitated.
Then I stepped aside.
Vanessa sat at the kitchen table.
For the first time, she looked like a normal person.
Not an enemy.
Not a rival.
Just someone carrying a secret too heavy.
“I became Daniel’s secretary four years ago.””
I stayed silent.
“Richard hired me first.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Richard?””
She nodded.
“He wanted access to Daniel.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel was the only person who could expose him.””
I crossed my arms.
“And Daniel?””
“He made a deal.””
“What kind of deal?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“He agreed to pretend we were having an affair.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Convenient.””
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like you both destroyed my life for a plan.””
Her eyes filled.
“I hated myself every day.””
I didn’t respond.
She reached into her purse.
She pulled out a photograph.
It showed Richard meeting with someone.
Someone familiar.
My heart stopped.
My mother-in-law.
Linda.
I stared.
“No.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“When was this taken?””
“Six months ago.””
I looked at the picture again.
Linda was sitting across from Richard.
Talking.
Planning.
My entire body went cold.
“My mother-in-law?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She wasn’t protecting me at the party.””
I looked at her.
“She was protecting herself.””
I stood up.
“Why?””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“Because Linda helped Richard build the entire plan.””
I felt the room spinning.
“No.””
“She knew about your marriage before you did.””
I thought about her words at the party.
Poor girl.
You shouldn’t have to put up with this.
It wasn’t sympathy.
It was performance.
“What did they want?””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“Your inheritance.””
I froze.
“My father’s money?””
“Not just money.””
She opened another folder.
“Control.””
Inside was a document.
A transfer agreement.
My name was printed at the top.
But below it was something I had never signed.
A fake signature.
Someone had been preparing to take everything from me.
My home.
My company shares.
My father’s legacy.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“They planned to make Daniel divorce you after you signed.””
I looked at her.
“But I never signed.””
She shook her head.
“That’s why they’re scared.””
“Why?””
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
“Because your father expected this.””
I stared.
“What do you mean?””
She pulled out one final document.
A letter.
From my father.
This one was dated one week before his death.

And the first sentence made my heart stop.
“If they try to steal everything from Emily, she must know the truth about her birth.””
