Chapter 5: The Woman Behind Vanessa
I spent the next morning trying to understand one thing.
Why was Vanessa afraid of my father?
It made no sense.
My father had passed away two years earlier.
Whatever secrets existed should have disappeared with him.
But Daniel’s reaction told me one thing.
He knew something I didn’t.
I went to my father’s old office.
After his death, I rarely entered the room.
It still smelled like him.
Leather.
Coffee.
The old wooden desk where he spent thousands of hours building his company.
I opened drawers.
Nothing.
I checked shelves.
Nothing.
Then I remembered something.
My father always hid important things inside ordinary objects.
When I was a child, he used to say, “The best hiding places are the ones nobody respects.””
I looked around.
My eyes stopped on an old dictionary.
I pulled it from the shelf.
A small key fell out.
My heart started racing.
The key opened a locked drawer beneath his desk.
Inside were several envelopes.
The first one had my name.
Emily.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
My father’s handwriting covered the page.
Emily,
If you are reading this, something happened that I hoped would never happen.
I sat down.
I couldn’t move.
The letter continued.
I always believed Daniel cared about you. But after our last conversation, I realized he cared about what being married to you could provide.
My breathing stopped.
There was more.
I hired someone to investigate before your wedding.
His name appeared in several conversations involving business deals.
But the investigation uncovered something worse.
I looked at the next page.
There was a photograph.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
And another man.
I recognized the man immediately.
It was Daniel’s business partner, Richard.
The three of them were standing outside a restaurant.
The date was six months before my wedding.
I read the note underneath.
“They were discussing access to Callahan Investments.””
My hands went numb.
This wasn’t just an affair.
It was a plan.
A plan that started before I ever walked down the aisle.
Then I found the final envelope.
Inside was a document.
A copy of Daniel’s original agreement.
But this one had something added.
A handwritten note from my father.
“If Daniel ever betrays Emily, this evidence protects her.””
I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
My heart jumped.
“How did you find me?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at the papers in my hand.
“You weren’t supposed to see those.””
I stood up.
“You knew.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“I knew your father was suspicious.””
“You knew he investigated you?””
“Yes.””
“And you still married me?””
His silence was enough.
I stepped closer.
“Was I ever real to you?””
Daniel looked away.
That hurt more than any confession.
Then he said something unexpected.
“At first, no.””
My eyes filled.
“But later?””
He swallowed.
“Later, I loved you.””
I wanted to believe him.
I really did.
But then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
It was a photo.
Daniel standing outside a hotel.
With Vanessa.
The date was yesterday.
The night of the party.
But that wasn’t what shocked me.
The caption underneath made my blood run cold.
“Ask your husband why he needed me to pretend to be his lover.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What does this mean?””
His face turned pale.
Because he knew exactly who sent it.
May you like
And then he whispered:
“She wasn’t supposed to contact you.””
