Chapter 11: The Man Behind Everything
The police arrived twelve minutes later.
But the SUV was gone.
No driver.
No license plate.
No evidence.
Just an empty street and a feeling that someone had been close enough to touch my life.
Detective Harris walked through my house carefully.
“This is escalating.””
I sat on the couch.
“Was my father killed?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
“I need proof before I say that officially.””
“But you think it.””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
For the first time, someone admitted what I already knew.
My father didn’t simply disappear from my life.
Someone took him.
Daniel arrived while the detective was still there.
The moment he entered, his eyes went directly to me.
Not the police.
Not Vanessa.
Me.
“Are you okay?””
I almost laughed.
“Now you ask?””
His face fell.
“I deserve that.””
“Yes, you do.””
Detective Harris looked between us.
“Mr. Carter, I need to ask you some questions.””
Daniel nodded.
“I understand.””
The detective opened his notebook.
“Why did you hide your relationship with Vanessa from your wife?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because I was trying to protect an investigation.””
“And why did your wife believe you were having an affair?””
Daniel had no answer.
The detective continued.
“Because from the outside, it looked exactly like one.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.””
I watched him.
For the first time, I saw the damage his choices caused.
Not just to me.
To everyone.
After the detective left, Daniel sat across from me.
“I need to tell you everything.””
I looked at him.
“You should have done that nine years ago.””
He accepted the words.
“You’re right.””
He took a folder from his bag.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Records.
“I started investigating Richard two years ago.””
I looked through them.
Bank transfers.
Hidden accounts.
Company records.
“Why didn’t you tell my father?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“I did.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“He knew.””
A chill moved through me.
“Then why didn’t he stop Richard?””
“Because Richard was closer than we thought.””
Daniel pointed to a document.
I read the name.
Linda Callahan.
My breath caught.
“Your mother?””
Daniel nodded.
“She wasn’t just helping Richard.””
“What was she doing?””
He looked at me.
“She was the one who introduced Richard to your father.””
I stared.
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“Your father trusted her.””
I felt sick.
My entire childhood.
My entire family.
Built on lies.
Then Daniel said something else.
Something I never expected.
“There’s one more person involved.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
“Someone who has been watching you since your father died.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
Daniel reached into the folder.
He pulled out a photograph.
A man standing outside my house.
The same man from the SUV.
I recognized him.
Because I had seen him before.
At my father’s funeral.
Daniel whispered:
“Your uncle.””
I froze.
“My father’s brother?””
He nodded.
“He disappeared after your father’s death.””
I stared at the photo.
“Why would my uncle want to hurt me?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because your father discovered something about him.””
“What?””
Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
“Where?””
I stood up.
“What happened?””
He ended the call.
“Detective Harris found your uncle.””
“Where?””
May you like
Daniel looked at me.
“At the place where your father died.””
