Chapter 8: The Hidden Car

The police station smelled like old paper and coffee.

I sat across from Detective Harris, staring at photographs spread across the table.

A damaged black sedan.

A broken windshield.

A license plate covered by dirt.

My father’s car.

For two years, I believed I knew how he died.

A rainy road.

A sudden accident.

A tragic mistake.

But now I was looking at proof that someone had buried the truth.

Detective Harris folded his hands.

“Your father’s vehicle was found in a private storage facility outside Chicago.””

“Who owned the facility?””

He looked at me.

“Richard Hale.””

My stomach dropped.

Daniel sat beside me, silent.

I turned toward him.

“You knew?””

His expression changed.

“No.””

“You knew Richard was involved.””

“I suspected.””

I stared at him.

“That’s not an answer.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I didn’t know about the car.””

Detective Harris watched us carefully.

“You two need to understand something. This investigation is no longer about financial fraud.””

He pushed another photo toward me.

“This was found inside the vehicle.””

It was a small recording device.

My hands went cold.

“What is that?””

“Your father’s final recording.””

The room became silent.

“Can you play it?””

The detective nodded.

A few seconds of static filled the room.

Then my father’s voice appeared.

“I know what they are planning.””

I stopped breathing.

His voice sounded rushed.

“I made a mistake trusting the wrong people.””

A second voice appeared.

A man.

I couldn’t recognize him.

“You should have walked away.””

My father answered.

“I won’t let you hurt my daughter.””

I grabbed the edge of the table.

The recording continued.

“You don’t understand what you started.””

Then the audio cut out.

Detective Harris looked at me.

“That’s all we recovered.””

I whispered:

“Who was the other person?””

“We’re working on it.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked shaken.

Not surprised.

Shaken.

And that scared me.

When we left the station, I stopped him outside.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel looked at the ground.

“I can’t.””

I almost laughed.

“After everything, you still can’t?””

He stepped closer.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

“You don’t get to decide that for me.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

Daniel was silent for a long time.

Finally, he said:

“Your father wasn’t investigating Richard alone.””

“Who else?””

He looked at me.

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother died when I was twelve.””

“I know.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Daniel looked away.

“She helped your father uncover the first part of the truth.””

I felt dizzy.

Every piece of my life was changing.

Every person I trusted had secrets.

That evening, I returned home alone.

I needed answers.

I searched through old family boxes in the attic.

Photographs.

Letters.

Memories.

Then I found something hidden inside my mother’s old jewelry box.

A second key.

Attached to it was a note.

“Only Emily should open this.””

My hands shook.

The key opened a small compartment beneath the floorboard.

Inside was a notebook.

My mother’s handwriting.

The first page contained a sentence that made my blood run cold.

“Daniel thinks he is using us.””

I turned the page.

“He has no idea we discovered his real plan.””

I stopped.

Daniel.

My husband.

My mother had written about him.

Nine years before.

I kept reading.

“He is not the mastermind.””

A chill ran through me.

“He is only the person they chose to blame.””

Suddenly, my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Daniel.

“Emily, do not trust anyone from my company.””

A second message came immediately.

“Especially Vanessa.””

I looked up.

May you like

Because Vanessa was standing outside my house.

And she was crying.
