Chapter 12: The Place It Started

The road was exactly how I imagined it.

Dark.

Quiet.

Empty.

The kind of place where a person could disappear and nobody would know.

Detective Harris stood beside the recovered vehicle.

My father’s car.

The same car that ended his life.

Or what everyone believed ended his life.

I walked closer.

My chest felt heavy.

Daniel followed behind me.

Neither of us spoke.

Detective Harris approached.

“We found your uncle here.””

“Alive?””

He nodded.

“But he didn’t run.””

That confused me.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted us to find him.””

I looked at the car.

“Why?””

The detective handed me a small recorder.

“This was found near him.””

I pressed play.

A man’s voice filled the air.

My uncle.

“Emily, if you’re hearing this, then they failed.””

I froze.

His voice continued.

“I know what everyone thinks.””

Static.

“I know they believe I betrayed your father.””

I looked at Daniel.

“But I was trying to stop them.””

My uncle’s voice shook.

“Your father found out Linda and Richard were stealing from the company.””

My hands tightened around the recorder.

“He also discovered they planned to use Daniel.””

Daniel looked down.

My uncle continued.

“Daniel wasn’t the enemy.””

I looked at my husband.

For some reason, hearing that from someone else mattered.

“Your father wanted Daniel to expose them.””

A pause.

“But before he could finish, they found out.””

The recording ended.

I stood there.

Unable to speak.

Detective Harris looked at me.

“Your uncle claims he witnessed the night of the accident.””

“What happened?””

“He says your father confronted Richard.””

“And?””

The detective looked at the ground.

“Someone pushed your father’s car off the road.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

“We don’t know yet.””

Then my phone rang.

Linda.

My mother-in-law.

I stared at the name.

Daniel looked at me.

“Don’t answer.””

But I did.

Her voice came immediately.

“Emily.””

She sounded calm.

Too calm.

“Where are you?””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“You’ve been asking questions you shouldn’t ask.””

My blood ran cold.

“How do you know where I am?””

Silence.

Then she laughed softly.

“Because I always knew where you were.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because you were never just Daniel’s wife.””

I gripped the phone.

“What does that mean?””

Her voice lowered.

“It means your father hid something from you.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What?””

Linda whispered:

“The company was never supposed to belong to you.””

A pause.

“It was supposed to belong to someone else.””

“Who?””

Her answer came immediately.

“Me.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Daniel looked terrified.

Detective Harris stepped closer.

“What did she say?””

I looked toward the dark road.

The place where my father’s story ended.

And mine began.

“She said she owns everything.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Because he understood something before I did.

Linda wasn’t running away.

She was coming for me.

May you like

And this time…

she wasn’t hiding.
