Chapter 1: The Red Wine Moment

“Emily, you need to understand something. Tonight was never about you.””

Those were the words my husband’s secretary whispered into my ear before everything fell apart.

Three minutes later, my husband Daniel would slap me in front of two hundred people at his company’s annual celebration.

But the worst part wasn’t the pain on my cheek.

It was the way everyone looked away.

I had spent three hours getting ready for that night.

Not because I needed to impress anyone.

Because after nine years of marriage, I still believed special moments mattered.

Daniel’s company party was one of the few nights each year when we dressed up, stood beside each other, and pretended we were the same couple who used to dance in our tiny apartment kitchen at midnight.

I wore the black silk dress he once told me made me look “impossible to ignore.””

I curled my hair the way he liked.

I even wore the diamond necklace he bought me for our eighth anniversary.

That necklace had been the symbol of the years we built together.

At least, that was what I thought.

The ballroom at the Chicago hotel was glowing when we arrived.

Crystal lights hung from the ceiling. Employees laughed near the bars. Executives shook hands while cameras flashed.

Daniel walked beside me with one hand on my back.

For a few minutes, I believed everything was okay.

Then Vanessa appeared.

She was wearing a white designer dress and the kind of confidence that only came from knowing she belonged somewhere.

She walked straight past several employees and stopped in front of us.

“Daniel!”” she said brightly.

“I’ve been waiting for you.””

Before I could react, she wrapped her arm around his.

Not a polite greeting.

Not a professional gesture.

A familiar one.

The kind of touch that made my stomach tighten.

Daniel smiled.

And that smile hurt more than I expected.

Because I hadn’t seen that expression directed at me in months.

Vanessa looked at me.

Then her eyes dropped to my necklace.

“Oh,” she said softly.

Her smile widened.

“That’s beautiful.””

I forced a laugh.

“Thank you.””

She tilted her head.

“Actually, I think it looks even better in person.””

Something about her tone made my skin crawl.

I looked at Daniel.

He suddenly seemed uncomfortable.

“Vanessa,” he warned.

But she ignored him.

She reached up and touched the diamonds around my neck.

“Funny how things work out,” she said.

My heartbeat slowed.

“What does that mean?””

She smiled.

“Daniel told me you weren’t wearing it anymore.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

I stared at my husband.

“Daniel?””

He looked around nervously.

“Emily, don’t do this here.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Do what? Ask why your secretary is wearing my anniversary necklace?””

Several people nearby stopped talking.

Vanessa gave a small laugh.

“Oh, honey. Don’t make it sound so dramatic.””

She leaned closer.

“Daniel and I both know what this necklace means.””

My fingers tightened around my clutch.

“What did you just say?””

Daniel grabbed my elbow.

“Stop.””

His voice wasn’t protective.

It was threatening.

“Don’t embarrass me tonight.””

I looked at him.

The man I had loved for nine years.

The man I defended when people questioned his late nights.

The man I trusted.

And for the first time, I wondered if I even knew him.

Vanessa stepped closer.

Her voice dropped low enough that only I could hear.

“You should enjoy this party, Emily.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

She smiled.

“Because it might be the last one you attend as his wife.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“Ask him who he’s been spending his business trips with.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Guilt.

Fear.

And that was enough.

My hand moved before my mind could stop it.

I grabbed my wine glass.

And threw it.

The red wine exploded across Vanessa’s white dress.

The ballroom went silent.

Vanessa screamed.

People turned.

Phones lifted.

Whispers spread.

Daniel reacted instantly.

Not by asking if I was okay.

Not by asking what she had said.

He grabbed my arm.

“WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?””

I barely had time to answer.

His hand came across my face.

The sound echoed through the ballroom.

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything.

I stumbled backward.

My cheek burned.

Two hundred people watched me fall apart.

Vanessa immediately stepped behind him.

“She’s crazy, Daniel,” she cried.

“I told you she would attack me.””

Daniel pointed toward the exit.

“Get out, Emily.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“You’re humiliating me in front of my entire company.””

My eyes moved across the room.

People avoided looking at me.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody helped.

Then my mother-in-law walked toward Vanessa.

She handed her a napkin.

“Poor girl,” she said gently.

“You shouldn’t have to deal with this.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“You knew about Daniel and Vanessa?””

My mother-in-law slowly lifted her eyes.

And the expression on her face told me everything.

“Yes,” she whispered.

May you like

Then she said something that changed my entire understanding of my marriage.

“I’ve known for almost a year.””
