Chapter 13: The Final Move

For the first time in my life, I understood what fear actually felt like.

Not the fear of losing money.

Not the fear of losing a marriage.

The fear of realizing someone had spent years building a trap around you.

Linda had not appeared suddenly.

She had been there from the beginning.

At my wedding.

At family dinners.

At birthdays.

Smiling.

Hugging me.

Calling me “daughter.””

While secretly planning to take everything my father built.

Detective Harris looked at me carefully.

“Emily, we need to move quickly.””

I nodded.

“What do we do?””

“We protect you and preserve the evidence.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And him?””

Daniel understood immediately.

“You still don’t trust me.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t.

Not completely.

Love didn’t disappear in one night.

But trust did.

Daniel stepped closer.

“I know I hurt you.””

His voice was quiet.

“I know I made choices that destroyed everything between us.””

He looked at the ground.

“But I swear to you, I never wanted your father hurt.””

I believed one thing.

He believed that.

But I still had questions.

“Why did you marry me?””

The question had haunted me for days.

Daniel looked at me.

“Because at first, I wanted what your family had.””

My heart tightened.

He continued.

“But then I met you.””

I said nothing.

“You were the first person who treated me like I mattered. Not like I was useful.””

His eyes filled.

“And that terrified me.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew the truth about how we started.””

I looked away.

Daniel continued.

“I spent years trying to fix what I did. But every time I tried to tell you, I convinced myself I was protecting you.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But it mattered.

Then Detective Harris’s phone rang.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He walked away.

A minute later, he returned.

“We have a problem.””

I stood.

“What happened?””

“Linda filed emergency legal documents this morning.””

My stomach dropped.

“For what?””

“Control of your father’s company assets.””

I laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

“She’s actually doing it.””

Daniel nodded.

“She knows we’re close.””

Detective Harris handed me a folder.

“She claims you are mentally unstable after your father’s death and incapable of managing the estate.””

I stared at the papers.

Me.

Unstable.

The woman who had her husband’s secretary wear her necklace.

The woman who was slapped in front of hundreds of people.

The woman everyone told to stay quiet.

Linda was rewriting the story.

Again.

But this time, I was ready.

“What does she not know?””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“That you have your father’s backup files.””

I smiled slightly.

“And she doesn’t know Vanessa turned against her.””

Daniel looked at me.

“She’ll come for Vanessa.””

I knew he was right.

We found Vanessa hiding at a small hotel outside the city.

When she opened the door, she looked exhausted.

“She knows,” Vanessa said.

“Who?””

“Linda.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Because someone inside the police department warned her.””

Everyone froze.

Detective Harris immediately became serious.

“Who told you that?””

Vanessa handed him a phone.

“A message.””

The screen showed a single sentence.

“Run before they find you.””

Detective Harris stared.

“This came from an internal number.””

The room went silent.

The enemy wasn’t just outside.

It was everywhere.

Then Vanessa looked at me.

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Linda has a meeting tomorrow.””

“With who?””

May you like

Vanessa swallowed.

“With the person who actually ordered your father’s death.””
