Chapter 8: The Connection Nobody Told Me

For years, I believed my story began when I met Adrian.

A coffee shop.

A conversation.

A smile.

A relationship.

But sitting in Rebecca’s office, I realized my story might have started long before I knew his name.

I picked up the old document.

“Why would Eleanor hide this?””

Rebecca looked at the papers.

“That is what we need to find out.””

I spent the afternoon going through my father’s old records.

Most were ordinary.

Business contracts.

Tax documents.

Property papers.

Then I found something strange.

A photograph.

It was old.

My father was standing outside his office.

Beside him was another person.

Eleanor.

Younger.

Different.

But unmistakably her.

I stared at the picture.

“My father knew her.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

She opened another folder.

“There was a business dispute twenty-five years ago.””

I looked up.

“What kind of dispute?””

“Your father’s company lost a major investment.””

I read the notes.

The details were incomplete.

But one thing was clear.

Eleanor had been involved.

“What happened?””

Rebecca turned another page.

“Your father accused someone of moving company funds.””

My hands tightened.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“We don’t know.””

I looked back at the photo.

But suddenly, everything felt connected.

The marriage.

The condo.

The money.

The fake documents.

The secret meetings.

Maybe Adrian was not the beginning of the problem.

Maybe he was only the latest piece.

That evening, I returned home.

The house felt different.

Not because it changed.

Because I finally saw it clearly.

Every room held memories.

Every corner reminded me of the person I thought I was building a life with.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice responded.

“Claire?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Susan.””

I froze.

“Susan who?””

There was a pause.

“Susan Parker.””

My heart jumped.

That name belonged to my father’s former assistant.

She disappeared after his company closed.

Nobody knew where she went.

“How did you get my number?””

“I have been trying to reach you for months.””

“Why?””

Her voice became quieter.

“Because I know what happened to your father’s company.””

I sat down.

“What do you mean?””

“I know who betrayed him.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Who?””

Silence.

Then she said:

“Eleanor’s family.””

I closed my eyes.

I already suspected.

But hearing it from someone else made it real.

“What proof do you have?””

“I kept copies.””

“Where?””

“I can meet you tomorrow.””

I looked around the empty house.

“Why now?””

Susan hesitated.

“Because I saw what Adrian and Eleanor were trying to do.””

A chill moved through me.

“You know about them?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Her voice dropped.

“Because I was there when the plan started.””

I stood.

“What plan?””

The line went silent.

Then Susan whispered:

“The plan to make you lose everything.””

The call ended.

I immediately called Rebecca.

She answered.

“What happened?””

I told her everything.

When I finished, she was quiet.

“Claire.””

“Yes?””

“You need to be careful tomorrow.””

“Why?””

“Because if Susan is telling the truth, you are no longer dealing with a family argument.””

I looked toward the window.

Outside, the city lights reflected against the glass.

“What am I dealing with?””

May you like

Rebecca’s answer came slowly.

“A twenty-five-year-old secret.””
