Chapter 5: The Woman Behind The Plan

Adrian followed me into the living room.

“Claire, you misunderstood.””

I almost smiled.

That was always the first sentence people used when they were caught.

“I heard everything.””

He stopped.

“You don’t know the full story.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

I waited.

For once, I wanted him to prove me wrong.

I wanted him to say something that would make everything make sense.

But Adrian only looked at the floor.

That hurt more than anger.

“Who is Eleanor talking about?”” I asked.

He looked up.

“She’s my mother.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He ran his hand through his hair.

“Claire, my family has problems.””

“No. Your family has plans.””

He looked frustrated.

“You think this is easy for me?””

I stared at him.

“Easy?””

I pointed toward the stairs.

“You were discussing how to stop me from finding out what you were doing.””

“That wasn’t the plan.””

“Then what was?””

He didn’t answer.

I walked away.

The next morning, I met Rebecca again.

She had news.

“We found the source of the fake document.””

My heart tightened.

“Who?””

She opened her laptop.

“An employee at a private financial office.””

“And?””

“He received instructions from someone connected to Eleanor.””

I stared at the screen.

“Someone connected?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Rebecca turned the laptop toward me.

The name appeared.

Adrian’s cousin.

The same cousin who had casually suggested moving me to Oakland.

The same cousin who had discussed replacing my furniture.

The same cousin who smiled while planning my life.

“They all knew,” I whispered.

Rebecca nodded.

“Possibly.””

I looked away.

The betrayal felt larger than Adrian.

Because it was not just one person.

It was a group of people who sat across from me at dinner and smiled.

That afternoon, I made a decision.

I stopped asking why.

I started preparing.

I returned home and opened every file cabinet.

Every account.

Every document.

I checked everything Adrian had ever asked me to sign.

And then I found something hidden in an old folder.

A marriage agreement.

Not ours.

A draft.

My name was written on top.

But the contents were shocking.

It listed my condo.

My investments.

My savings.

Everything I owned.

And next to each item was a note.

*Available after marriage.*

My hands shook.

I took pictures of every page.

Then I heard the front door open.

Adrian.

I quickly closed the folder.

He walked into the room.

“What are you doing?””

“Cleaning.””

He looked around.

“You never clean the office.””

I smiled slightly.

“I guess I changed.””

He stared at me.

Something was different.

Maybe he sensed it.

Maybe he realized I was no longer the woman who trusted every word he said.

“I spoke with my mother,” he said.

“And?””

“She thinks you need time.””

I laughed softly.

“Your mother thinks I need time?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

He hesitated.

Then he said:

“To accept reality.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

His eyebrows lifted.

“No?””

I stepped closer.

“The reality is that you thought I would never look closer.””

His expression changed.

“Claire.””

“The reality is that you believed love made me blind.””

I picked up my phone.

“The reality is you were wrong.””

That night, Rebecca sent me a message.

One sentence.

*We found another document.*

Then another message arrived.

A photo.

It was a bank transfer.

The sender was Adrian.

The receiver was Eleanor.

The amount was shocking.

But the date was worse.

It was sent three days after our wedding.

May you like

And the description line said:

*First payment received.*
