Chapter 6: The Family Meeting
I spent the entire night staring at that transfer.
Three days after our wedding.
Three days.
While I was unpacking boxes.
While I was hanging photos.
While I was telling friends how lucky I was.
Adrian was already making payments to his mother.
I remembered that week.
The flowers.
The smiles.
The promises.
“Forever,” he had said.
Apparently forever had an expiration date.
The next morning, I called Adrian.
“I need you to come home tonight.””
There was a pause.
“Why?””
“Because your family needs to hear something.””
His voice changed.
“What did you do?””
That question told me everything.
Not “What happened?””
Not “Are you okay?””
What did you do?
Like I was the problem.
“Come home, Adrian.””
That evening, the house felt different.
Not because anything changed.
Because I changed.
For the first time, I was not waiting for someone else to explain my life.
I was taking control of it.
At 7 p.m., Adrian arrived.
Ten minutes later, Eleanor walked in.
Of course she did.
I was not surprised.
She looked around the living room.
“This is unnecessary.””
I smiled.
“No.””
I placed a folder on the table.
“This is overdue.””
Charles arrived next.
Then the cousin.
The same people who had sat at dinner and planned my future.
They all looked confused.
Good.
They should.
Eleanor crossed her arms.
“What is this?””
I opened the folder.
“This is the truth.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“No more interruptions.””
Everyone became quiet.
I placed the first document on the table.
“The fake property agreement.””
Charles immediately frowned.
“That proves nothing.””
I placed another paper down.
“The financial records.””
Then another.
“The payments to Eleanor.””
The room changed.
Not much.
Just enough.
Eleanor’s confidence weakened.
Adrian stepped forward.
“You don’t understand.””
I looked at him.
“You’re right.””
I nodded slowly.
“I don’t understand how you could look me in the eyes every day while planning to take my home.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Eleanor finally said:
“You are being emotional.””
I laughed.
“Emotional?””
I pointed at the papers.
“You created fake documents.””
She looked away.
“That is an accusation.””
“No.””
I opened my laptop.
“This is evidence.””
I pressed play.
A recording filled the room.
Adrian’s voice.
Eleanor’s voice.
Their conversation from downstairs.
Everyone heard it.
Everyone.
Adrian went pale.
Eleanor’s expression disappeared.
Charles looked at his son.
“What did you do?””
For the first time, Adrian looked afraid.
Not annoyed.
Not frustrated.
Afraid.
I closed the laptop.
“This is over.””
Eleanor suddenly stood.
“You think you won?””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
She smiled.
A cold smile.
“No, Claire.””
She reached into her purse.
Then she placed an envelope on the table.
My name was written across the front.
My blood ran cold.
Because I recognized the handwriting.
It was mine.
Eleanor looked directly at me.
“You should open it.””
I stared at the envelope.
“How did you get this?””
Her smile widened.
“Because you wrote it.””
I slowly picked it up.
And when I opened it, I saw the date.
The date was from two years before I met Adrian.
Inside was a letter that revealed something I never told anyone.
May you like
A secret about my family.
A secret that could change everything.
