Chapter 13: The Final Document
Charles walked toward us slowly.
Not rushed.
Not angry.
Calm.
That was the most frightening part.
He looked exactly like the man who sat at the dinner table weeks earlier, politely explaining why my home should belong to his family.
But now there was no audience.
No relatives.
No fake smile.
Just the truth.
“Claire,” he said.
I stood still.
“What are you doing here?””
He looked at Adrian.
Then back at me.
“I think you know.””
Adrian stepped between us.
“Dad, stop.””
Charles smiled slightly.
“Now you care?””
Adrian looked away.
The pain between them was obvious.
“You don’t understand what you started,” Adrian said.
Charles laughed quietly.
“I started?””
His eyes moved to me.
“Your father started this when he thought he could hide what belonged to us.””
I felt my anger rise.
“Your family destroyed my father’s company.””
Charles’s expression changed.
Not guilt.
Annoyance.
“Your father was not as innocent as you believe.””
I stepped forward.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I expect you to understand.””
He lifted the folder.
“Everything you are looking for is inside here.””
My eyes locked onto it.
“The original documents?””
“Yes.””
Adrian looked at the folder.
“Where did you get that?””
Charles ignored him.
“Your father created a backup plan. He knew he might lose everything.””
I stared at him.
“Then why do you have it?””
A long silence followed.
Then Charles answered.
“Because I helped him create it.””
I froze.
“What?””
Adrian looked shocked too.
“You never told me that.””
Charles looked at his son.
“You were never supposed to know everything.””
That sentence changed the entire conversation.
Even Adrian had been kept in the dark.
Charles opened the folder.
Inside were old contracts.
Ownership records.
Legal agreements.
My father’s signature.
Everything.
“The company shares were transferred into a private trust,” Charles said.
“For Claire.””
I looked at Adrian.
He looked just as surprised.
“Why?”” I asked.
Charles shrugged.
“Because your father trusted you.””
I felt tears forming.
My father had known.
He had planned for a future where I would need protection.
But then I noticed something.
One document was missing.
The final page.
“Where is the rest?””
Charles closed the folder.
“That is the part you need to understand.””
“What?””
“The trust only activates when the original beneficiary confirms ownership.””
I frowned.
“Meaning?””
“You need the final verification.””
“Where is it?””
Charles smiled.
“You have it.””
I felt confused.
“I don’t.””
He looked at me.
“Yes, you do.””
Then I remembered.
The letter.
The one I wrote to myself.
The one that said:
*Remember what you built. Remember what belongs to you.*
My heart started racing.
“The letter.””
Charles nodded.
“Your father knew you would forget.””
Adrian looked at me.
“Your letter was not just a reminder.””
I stared at them.
“What was it?””
Charles answered:
“The final key.””
Everything suddenly made sense.
My father had hidden the proof inside something only I would keep.
Not a bank.
Not a lawyer.
Me.
But then Charles reached toward me.
“Give it to me.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
His expression hardened.
“You don’t understand what you are holding.””
“I understand enough.””
“You think this is about revenge.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“This is about the truth.””
Charles’s face became colder.
“You sound just like your father.””
“Good.””
For the first time, he looked angry.
Adrian stepped beside me.
“Dad, it’s over.””
Charles stared at him.
“You would choose her?””
Adrian looked down.
Then back up.
“Yes.””
Charles laughed.
A bitter, disappointed laugh.
“You have no idea what you are doing.””
He turned away.
Then stopped.
“One last warning, Claire.””
I watched him carefully.
“You have the documents.””
“Yes.””
“But you don’t have the complete story.””
“What does that mean?””
He looked over his shoulder.
“It means your father didn’t trust everyone in his own family either.””
Then he walked away.
I looked at Adrian.
“What did he mean?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Because his phone had started ringing.
The screen showed one name.
Eleanor.
He answered.
Her first words made his face change.
“Adrian, your mother knows where Claire’s father hid the original evidence.””
I grabbed his arm.
“Where?””
May you like
Adrian looked at me.
“She is going there now.””
