Chapter 14: The Truth My Father Protected
We drove across the city faster than we should have.
But for once, I did not care.
Eleanor was heading toward the one place my father trusted.
The place connected to everything.
The old company building.
It had been abandoned for years.
But according to Adrian, the property was still owned by a hidden trust.
My trust.
When we arrived, the building looked exactly like the pictures from my father’s records.
Old.
Silent.
Forgotten.
But inside was where the truth had survived.
Adrian looked at me before we entered.
“I need to tell you something.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“My mother knew I was going to marry you.””
I stared at him.
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
His voice became quieter.
“She chose me because I was the only one in the family who could get close to you.””
The pain came back.
Even though I already knew.
Hearing him say it still hurt.
“But?””
He looked at me.
“But I started loving you.””
I looked away.
“That does not erase what you did.””
“I know.””
“And I don’t know if I can forgive you.””
“I know.””
For the first time, he accepted the consequences.
We entered the building.
Inside, everything was covered in dust.
Then we found it.
A hidden room behind an old storage wall.
Inside were boxes.
Hundreds of pages.
Photos.
Records.
And a video recorder.
I looked at Adrian.
“My father left all of this?””
“Yes.””
I opened the first box.
Inside was a letter.
This one was addressed directly to me.
I opened it.
*Claire, if you found this, then they came back.*
My hands trembled.
*I need you to know one thing. I did not lose everything. I protected it.*
I continued reading.
My father explained everything.
The company.
The betrayal.
The money stolen.
But the final part shocked me.
He had known Charles was involved.
He had known Eleanor was involved.
But he also knew someone else had helped him.
Someone from inside their family.
Someone who regretted what happened.
Someone who gave him the chance to protect his daughter.
I turned the page.
The name was there.
Adrian.
I looked up.
“What?””
Adrian stepped closer.
“What is it?””
I handed him the letter.
His face changed as he read.
“I don’t understand.””
I looked at him.
“Your father didn’t know you were part of the plan.””
He kept reading.
Then he froze.
“My grandfather…”
“What?””
“He knew.””
I looked at him.
“Your grandfather?””
Adrian nodded.
“He was the one who created the original scheme.””
The room became silent.
The entire family history suddenly became clear.
Charles was not the beginning.
Eleanor was not the beginning.
They were continuing something much older.
Then we heard a sound.
Footsteps.
Someone was inside.
Adrian turned.
“Stay here.””
“No.””
I picked up the documents.
“I’m done hiding.””
A voice echoed through the room.
“Claire.””
Eleanor.
She stepped into the doorway.
Her eyes moved to the papers.
“You found them.””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
She smiled sadly.
“I was hoping you wouldn’t.””
“Why?””
She looked around the room.
“Because once you know the truth, you lose the luxury of pretending your family was innocent.””
I tightened my grip on the documents.
“My father was innocent.””
Eleanor looked at me.
“Was he?””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
She walked closer.
“Ask yourself why he never told you everything.””
My heart started pounding.
“What are you saying?””
Eleanor smiled.
“Your father had secrets too.””
Then she reached into her coat.
And pulled out an old photograph.
A photograph of my father.
With someone I never expected.
May you like
My mother.
Who was supposed to have died before I was born.
