Chapter 2: The Husband Who Stayed Silent

I drove home without turning on the radio.

The city lights blurred through my windshield, but I barely noticed them.

My mind kept replaying the dinner.

The way they spoke.

The way they planned.

The way Adrian sat beside me and watched strangers redesign my life.

The hardest part was not Eleanor wanting my condo.

It was realizing my husband had already given her permission in his mind.

When I opened the door, Adrian was already there.

He stood in the living room with his jacket removed, looking irritated rather than guilty.

That hurt.

“You left.””

I placed my purse on the table.

“Yes.””

“You embarrassed my family.””

I stared at him.

“Your family embarrassed themselves.””

His jaw tightened.

“You could have handled it better.””

“Handled what better? The part where they decided I should move out of my own home?””

“It was a suggestion.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“It was a decision. Everyone knew except me.””

Adrian walked toward the kitchen.

“You are making this into something bigger than it is.””

I followed him.

“Did you know they were going to ask me?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“How long?””

He sighed.

“Claire.””

“How long have you been discussing moving my mother into my condo?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“A few weeks.””

A few weeks.

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“You had weeks to tell me.””

“It wasn’t finalized.””

“You let them sit there and plan my bedroom like I wasn’t your wife.””

His expression hardened.

“My mother sacrificed a lot for me.””

“And what about me?””

He looked away.

That moment told me everything.

I had spent years believing Adrian and I were partners.

But maybe I was the only one who thought that.

The next morning, I met my attorney, Rebecca, at her office downtown.

She was waiting with a folder on her desk.

“I found what you asked me to look into,” she said.

I sat down.

“What did you find?””

Rebecca opened the folder.

“Several unusual financial documents connected to Adrian.””

My heart slowed.

“What kind of documents?””

“Transfers. Agreements. And one document that concerns your condo.””

I leaned forward.

“My condo?””

She nodded.

“Adrian attempted to add Eleanor’s name to a financial agreement related to the property.””

I stared at her.

“He tried to do what?””

“He did not have legal authority to transfer ownership.””

A wave of anger moved through me.

“But he tried.””

“Yes.””

Rebecca placed another paper in front of me.

“There is something else.””

I looked down.

It was a bank record.

A large payment.

From Adrian’s account.

To Eleanor.

Monthly.

For over a year.

I looked at Rebecca.

“He has been paying her already?””

“Yes.””

My hands went cold.

“How much?””

Rebecca looked at the page.

“Almost thirty thousand dollars total.””

I closed my eyes.

The twenty-eight hundred dollars at dinner suddenly made sense.

It was not a new idea.

It was a replacement plan.

He wanted me to start paying what he had already promised.

“Why would he do this?””

Rebecca studied me carefully.

“Claire, did Adrian ever pressure you to combine finances?””

“Yes.””

“And did you refuse?””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“Good decision.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because if your income and assets were combined, this situation would be much more complicated.””

I left her office carrying copies of every document.

That evening, I returned home earlier than expected.

Adrian was upstairs.

I heard voices.

His and Eleanor’s.

I stopped outside the door.

“You should have pushed harder,” Eleanor said.

Adrian sounded frustrated.

“She won’t agree.””

“She will eventually.””

“No, Claire is stubborn.””

There was a pause.

Then Eleanor spoke again.

“Then use what she cares about.””

My hand tightened around the papers.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian lowered his voice.

“You know what I mean.””

I stepped closer.

Eleanor continued.

“Her reputation. Her friends. Her career.””

My breath caught.

They were not trying to convince me.

They were planning to pressure me.

I opened the door.

Both of them turned.

The color disappeared from Adrian’s face.

“Claire.””

I held up the documents.

“How long were you planning to steal my life?””

Nobody answered.

Then Eleanor slowly smiled.

And somehow, that scared me more.

Because she looked completely calm.

“You finally found out.””

I stared at her.

“Found out what?””

May you like

She stood.

“The reason Adrian married you.””
