Chapter 3: The Truth Behind The Marriage

The room went silent.

For a few seconds, I could only hear the clock on the wall.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

I looked at Adrian.

My husband.

The person who had promised to love me.

“The reason Adrian married me?””

I repeated Eleanor’s words.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her.””

But Eleanor laughed softly.

“Why pretend now?””

“Mom.””

“No. She deserves to know.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly.

Like a crack spreading through glass.

I looked at Adrian.

“Tell me she is lying.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence answered me.

I walked backward.

“How long?””

“Claire—”

“How long did your family know?””

Adrian looked ashamed now.

But shame was not the same as honesty.

“Before we got married,” he finally admitted.

I felt dizzy.

“Before?””

He sat down.

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then explain it.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“My family was struggling.””

I almost laughed.

“Your family owns multiple properties.””

“My mother had expenses.””

“Your mother has three homes.””

His face tightened.

“You don’t understand.””

“No, Adrian. I understand perfectly.””

Eleanor crossed her arms.

“Adrian needed stability.””

I looked at her.

“And I was the solution?””

She said nothing.

That was enough.

I remembered our first meeting.

The charming man who brought me coffee every morning.

The man who said he loved how independent I was.

The man who told me I was different from everyone else.

Maybe I was different.

Maybe I was simply the person who had the assets they wanted.

“I want you both to leave.””

Adrian stood.

“Claire, don’t do this.””

“I said leave.””

“You’re overreacting.””

“No.””

I pointed toward the door.

“I am finally reacting.””

Eleanor picked up her purse.

“You will regret this.””

I looked at her.

“Maybe.””

Then I smiled slightly.

“But not as much as you will.””

After they left, I sat alone in my living room.

The same living room they had tried to redesign.

The same home they thought belonged to them.

I opened my laptop.

For years, I had avoided looking too deeply into Adrian’s finances because I trusted him.

That mistake was over.

I spent the next several hours reviewing every document Rebecca gave me.

Then I found something.

A company name.

A small consulting company connected to Adrian.

At first, it looked normal.

Until I noticed the address.

It was Eleanor’s property.

I called Rebecca immediately.

She answered on the second ring.

“Did you find something?””

“Yes.””

I explained.

She became quiet.

“Claire, do not contact Adrian about this yet.””

“Why?””

“Because if my suspicion is correct, this is bigger than the condo.””

I stared at the screen.

“What do you mean?””

“There may be money missing.””

The next morning, Rebecca and I met again.

She brought another folder.

Inside were records from the last three years.

Transfers.

Payments.

Contracts.

My hands shook as I read them.

Adrian had not only hidden money.

He had been moving funds through accounts connected to his family.

Then Rebecca placed one final document on the table.

“I found this yesterday.””

I looked down.

It was an email.

From Adrian.

To Eleanor.

The date was six months before our wedding.

My heart pounded as I read the first line.

*Once we are married, Claire’s condo will solve everything.*

I stopped breathing.

The second line was worse.

*She trusts me completely.*

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I was not angry.

I was simply tired.

Tired of defending myself against people who were supposed to protect me.

Rebecca gently pushed the paper closer.

“Claire, there is one more thing.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Adrian has already started the process of transferring something else.””

“What?””

She turned the folder around.

On the page was my name.

But underneath it was a signature.

My signature.

Except I had never signed that document.

Rebecca’s voice became serious.

“Claire…”

I stared at the paper.

Someone had copied my signature.

May you like

And suddenly, losing my condo was no longer the biggest danger.

Someone was trying to make it look like I had agreed.
