Chapter 8: The Truth My Father Hid
I had spent my entire life believing my father was the one person who would never lie to me.
The person who protected me.
The person who stood between me and the world.
But standing in that room, watching his silence, I realized something painful.
Sometimes the people who love you can still hurt you.
Not because they don’t care.
Because they think they know what’s best.
And sometimes, they are wrong.
“How long?”” I asked.
My father looked at me.
“Emily…”
“How long did you know Mom was alive?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Eight years.””
The answer felt like a physical blow.
I stepped backward.
“Eight years?””
“Yes.””
“You let me mourn her.””
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I laughed.
“You all love saying that.””
Brandon looked away.
My father came closer.
“Your mother was being hunted.””
“And I was what?””
He stopped.
“The person everyone wanted to use.””
I shook my head.
“You should have told me.””
“We tried.””
“No.””
My voice sharpened.
“You decided for me.””
My father lowered his eyes.
And that hurt.
Because he knew I was right.
“I’m sorry.””
I turned away.
Apologies were everywhere now.
From Brandon.
From my father.
From people who had waited until everything broke before telling me the truth.
I looked at the documents on the table.
“What exactly happened eight years ago?””
My father sat down.
“Your mother discovered that your uncle was moving company assets illegally.””
I listened.
“She confronted him.””
“And?””
“He threatened her.””
My hands tightened.
“Then she disappeared.””
My father nodded.
“We made it look like she died because it was the only way to keep her safe.””
“Keep her safe?””
I looked at him.
“What about me?””
His expression broke.
“We thought if you knew, you would try to find her.””
“I would have.””
“I know.””
“And that scared you?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“That’s what scared us.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Your courage.””
The room went quiet.
My father continued.
“You’ve always believed you could fix everything.””
I almost laughed.
“Like Mom?””
“Yes.””
I looked away.
Because that was true.
I had spent years fixing Brandon’s mistakes.
Covering for him.
Supporting him.
Making excuses.
And he had mistaken my kindness for weakness.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From my mother.
*Meet me tomorrow. Come alone.*
I stared at the screen.
My father saw it.
“No.””
I looked up.
“No?””
“You cannot go alone.””
“She asked me to.””
“She also disappeared for eight years.””
I flinched.
Because even though I hated hearing it, he was right.
Then Brandon spoke.
“She’s testing you.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She needs to know if you can be trusted.””
I stared.
“You’re defending her?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I’m telling you how people like your mother think.””
That sentence caught my attention.
“People like my mother?””
Brandon looked down.
“People who spend years fighting powerful enemies.””
I watched him carefully.
“What else do you know?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Your mother didn’t disappear because she was afraid.””
“Then why?””
“Because she was building a case.””
“Against my uncle?””
“And against me.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Why?””
Brandon looked at me.
“Because I helped him.””
Silence.
Finally.
The truth.
“You helped him destroy me.””
He nodded.
“I did.””
“Why are you telling me now?””
“Because Vanessa tried to kill me.””
I froze.
“What?””
He reached into his pocket.
Pulled out his phone.
Showed me a video.
Security footage.
A parking garage.
Vanessa approaching Brandon’s car.
Then placing something underneath it.
My stomach turned.
“She knew I had evidence,” Brandon said.
I looked at him.
“And now?””
“She’s running.””
“Where?””
He looked at my father.
Nobody answered.
That was when I noticed something.
My father looked nervous.
Not about Vanessa.
About something else.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
My father was silent.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
And his face went pale.
“What happened?””
He slowly lowered the phone.
“Emily…”
I stood.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“The police just found Vanessa.””
My heart raced.
“Is she alive?””
My father swallowed.
“Yes.””
A pause.
“But she’s not the person they arrested.””
I frowned.
“Who did they arrest?””
My father looked at Brandon.
May you like
Then at me.
“They arrested your uncle.””
