Chapter 2: The Signature He Stole
The party ended in less than five minutes.
The same people who had watched me fall into the pool suddenly remembered they had somewhere else to be.
Investors who had spent the evening laughing beside Brandon now avoided eye contact.
Business partners who had praised him as a genius quietly walked away.
Funny how quickly people leave when they realize the person they admired is standing on a collapsing foundation.
I stayed.
I wanted answers.
Brandon followed me inside the house.
“Emily, you need to listen to me.””
I turned around.
Water was still dripping from my hair onto the marble floor.
“Do I?””
“Yes.””
“You pushed me into a pool in front of everyone we know.””
“That was a joke.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
It was calm.
“It was humiliation.””
Brandon opened his mouth, but I continued.
“You wanted Vanessa to laugh.””
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
But I noticed.
Because I had spent ten years studying his moods.
“You’re being dramatic.””
I laughed softly.
“Dramatic?””
“Yes. You always make yourself the victim.””
That sentence hurt more than the fall.
Because it was familiar.
Every argument.
Every insult.
Every time he crossed a line.
He somehow became the injured one.
The door opened behind us.
Vanessa walked in.
Her confidence was gone.
“Brandon…”
He turned.
“What?””
She lowered her voice.
“Your father-in-law knows?””
Brandon’s jaw tightened.
“Obviously.””
She looked nervous.
“You said nobody would find out.””
I felt my stomach drop.
Nobody would find out.
Not “it wasn’t true.””
Not “we can explain.””
Nobody would find out.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What exactly did you think nobody would find out?””
She stared at me.
For the first time, she looked young.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just scared.
Brandon stepped between us.
“Emily, don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
“Destroy everything because you’re angry.””
I stared at him.
“Destroy everything?””
I pointed toward the window.
“The company you built was funded by my family.””
His face hardened.
“I built that company.””
“No.””
I walked closer.
“You managed it.””
The difference made him angry.
Because it was true.
Ten years earlier, Brandon had an idea and almost no money.
My father had believed in him.
He had invested $12 million when every other investor walked away.
But my father didn’t just give him money.
He gave him trust.
And I gave him my entire life.
Brandon lowered his voice.
“You wouldn’t actually remove me.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because you love me.””
There it was.
The confidence.
The assumption.
The belief that my love was a chain around my own neck.
I shook my head.
“No, Brandon.””
His expression changed.
“I loved who you were.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
The next morning, I arrived at Hale Innovations headquarters before Brandon.
That had never happened before.
Employees stared as I walked through the lobby.
Some looked surprised.
Some looked uncomfortable.
But nobody stopped me.
Because my name was on the foundation documents.
My family’s trust controlled the company.
And for the first time, I was going to use that power.
Inside the conference room, my father sat at the head of the table.
He looked tired.
Not angry.
That somehow made it worse.
“Emily,” he said softly.
I sat beside him.
“Tell me everything.””
My father placed a folder on the table.
“We discovered the transfer yesterday afternoon.””
I opened it.
The first page showed the transaction.
The second page showed the approval.
My blood ran cold.
Because the signature wasn’t Brandon’s.
It wasn’t Vanessa’s.
It was mine.
I looked up.
“Dad…”
He nodded.
“He forged your signature.””
I stared at the paper.
For years, I had signed documents for the company.
Not because I worked there.
Because Brandon asked me to.
“Emily, I need you to understand something,” my father said.
“What?””
“This wasn’t just theft.””
He opened another file.
“This was preparation.””
Inside were copies of emails.
Messages between Brandon and Vanessa.
Plans.
Dates.
Financial records.
And then I saw one sentence that made my hands shake.
A message from Brandon.
“If Emily signs the final transfer documents, the company will legally become mine before she realizes what happened.””
I couldn’t breathe.
My father quietly closed the folder.
“He wasn’t just stealing money.””
I looked at him.
“What was he trying to do?””
My father’s eyes hardened.
“He was trying to steal your entire inheritance.””
Before I could answer, my phone started ringing.
The name on the screen made my heart stop.
It was Brandon.
I almost didn’t pick up.
But I did.
His voice came through immediately.
“Emily, we need to talk.””
I said nothing.
Then he whispered the words that made me realize he knew something I didn’t.
“I know your father showed you the documents.””
A chill went through me.
“How?””
There was a pause.
May you like
Then Brandon said:
“Because the person who gave him those documents is standing right next to me.””
