Chapter 4: The Secret Behind My Name

The signature on that document looked like mine.

But I knew I had never written it.

My fingers trembled as I held the paper above the conference table.

The room was silent.

Twenty people were watching me.

Brandon was watching me.

And somehow, after everything he had done, he still looked like he believed he had won.

“Emily,” my father said quietly.

“Read the document.””

I looked down.

The title at the top made my stomach twist.

*Original Founder Agreement — Hale Innovations.*

Founder agreement.

Not investor agreement.

Not marriage agreement.

Founder.

I looked at Brandon.

“What is this?””

He leaned back in his chair.

“That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to tell you.””

I almost laughed.

“Trying to tell me?””

His expression hardened.

“Yes. You think I stole something from you, but you never understood what you were actually part of.””

The woman standing near the door stepped forward.

She looked to be in her fifties, with silver hair pulled neatly behind her shoulders.

I recognized her.

Not personally.

But from old company photos.

“Dr. Eleanor Hayes,” my father said.

Brandon’s face changed.

“Why is she here?””

Eleanor placed another folder on the table.

“Because I was there when Hale Innovations began.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked at me.

“Emily, your mother asked me to keep these records safe.””

My breath caught.

My mother.

The one person who had always believed in me before anyone else.

“My mother?””

Eleanor nodded.

“She never wanted you involved in the company while you were young. She wanted you to have a normal life.””

I stared at the papers.

“But Brandon started the company.””

A strange sadness crossed Eleanor’s face.

“No.””

The word landed like a stone.

“No?””

“Brandon presented the company idea. But the original concept, the patents, and the first development plans came from you and your mother.””

I couldn’t move.

“That’s impossible.””

Eleanor opened the folder.

Inside were documents dated twelve years earlier.

Before Brandon became famous.

Before Hale Innovations existed.

My name was everywhere.

Research notes.

Design plans.

Patent applications.

I felt dizzy.

“I don’t understand.””

My father looked down.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I turned toward him.

“Protect me from what?””

His silence answered before his words did.

“From Brandon.””

The room became colder.

Brandon stood suddenly.

“This is ridiculous.””

My father looked at him.

“Sit down.””

Something about my father’s voice made Brandon hesitate.

“You knew?”” I asked my father.

He nodded slowly.

“I knew Brandon had taken credit.””

My chest tightened.

“And you let him?””

My father looked away.

“That was my mistake.””

For the first time in years, I saw regret on his face.

“When you met Brandon, you were happy. You believed in him. Your mother and I thought maybe he would eventually do the right thing.””

I looked at Brandon.

He didn’t deny it.

That hurt more than anything.

“You stole my work.””

Brandon shook his head.

“No. I built it.””

“You used my ideas.””

“I turned them into a company.””

“You took my name off everything.””

His jaw tightened.

“You weren’t interested in business.””

The room went silent.

Because that was the excuse.

The one I had heard for years.

Brandon continued.

“You liked helping people. You liked charity events. You liked designing things. I handled the real work.””

I stared at him.

“The real work?””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“You mean taking credit?””

His eyes narrowed.

“You’re emotional again.””

That word.

Again.

Like my pain was always an inconvenience.

Like my feelings were proof I was weak.

Eleanor stepped forward.

“Brandon, you should be careful.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because I have copies of every original file.””

His confidence faded.

Eleanor continued.

“And I have proof that you transferred company ownership documents using Emily’s forged signature.””

The board members exchanged looks.

Brandon’s face turned pale.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

For one second, fear appeared in his eyes.

He answered.

“What?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Brandon’s expression changed.

“What do you mean she disappeared?””

My father watched him carefully.

“Who disappeared?””

Brandon ended the call.

Nobody moved.

Then he looked directly at me.

And said something I never expected.

“Vanessa took the money.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“She’s gone.””

A bitter laugh escaped my lips.

“You’re blaming her now?””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“No, Brandon.””

I picked up the documents.

“You’re finally realizing someone else betrayed you.””

He stepped closer.

“Emily, listen to me.””

But I stepped back.

Because for the first time, I saw him clearly.

Not as my husband.

Not as the man I loved.

As someone who had spent years building a lie.

Then my father’s assistant rushed into the room holding a tablet.

“Mr. Hayes.””

Everyone turned.

He looked nervous.

“We found Vanessa’s last message.””

My father took the tablet.

His face changed.

“What does it say?””

The assistant swallowed.

“She said she didn’t steal the money.””

I frowned.

“Then where did it go?””

The assistant looked at me.

And quietly answered:

“She said Brandon told her to hide it because he was preparing for the day Emily found out the truth.””

My heart stopped.

May you like

Because that meant Brandon wasn’t trying to escape.

He was preparing something much bigger.
