Chapter 11: The Night Everything Changed

The hospital room was quiet.

Too quiet.

I stood outside the door for almost a minute before entering.

I wasn’t ready.

How do you prepare yourself to see someone who was supposed to be gone forever?

How do you look at the person you mourned for eight years and say:

Why did you leave me?

My mother looked smaller than I remembered.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face had more lines.

But her eyes were the same.

The same eyes that used to look at me like I was the most important person in the world.

“Emily.””

Her voice broke.

I stopped.

Because suddenly I wasn’t thirty years old.

I was a little girl again.

Waiting for my mother to hug me.

I walked closer.

Then stopped beside the bed.

“I don’t know what to say.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“You let me think you were dead.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I know.””

“You let me hate myself for not knowing.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

Her lips trembled.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

I looked away.

“That answer doesn’t work anymore.””

She closed her eyes.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I was wrong.””

I sat down.

For the first time, she wasn’t explaining.

She was admitting.

And somehow, that hurt more.

“Tell me everything.””

She nodded slowly.

“Your uncle was never the beginning.””

I already knew.

“Who was?””

My mother looked toward the window.

“A man named Victor Hale.””

I frowned.

“Hale?””

“Yes.””

“Brandon’s family?””

She nodded.

“His father.””

My stomach dropped.

“Brandon’s father died years ago.””

“He didn’t die.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“He disappeared.””

The room felt colder.

“Why?””

“Because he was involved in everything.””

My mother took a breath.

“Your grandfather created the original technology behind Hale Innovations. When he died, the rights were supposed to pass to your family.””

“But?””

“But Victor wanted control.””

“So he used Thomas.””

“Yes.””

“And Brandon?””

My mother looked at me sadly.

“Brandon grew up believing he deserved everything.””

I looked down.

“That explains a lot.””

She reached for my hand.

“I’m sorry.””

I almost pulled away.

Almost.

But I didn’t.

“Did you know he was going to marry me?””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“I tried to warn you.””

“When?””

“Before your wedding.””

I froze.

“You did?””

“I sent you a letter.””

I shook my head.

“I never received one.””

My mother’s face changed.

Because she realized something.

Someone had intercepted it.

“Who had access to your mail?””

I thought.

Then I knew.

Brandon.

But before I could say it, my mother whispered:

“Your father.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“He was the only person who knew where I sent it.””

The room went silent.

Again.

My father.

Another secret.

Another wound.

I stood.

“I need answers.””

My mother grabbed my hand.

“Emily, wait.””

“What?””

“There is something you need to know about your father.””

I stared.

“What now?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He didn’t just hide my disappearance.””

I waited.

“He helped create the company structure that allowed Brandon to take control.””

I couldn’t speak.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You’re wrong.””

My mother looked devastated.

“I wish I was.””

My phone rang.

My father.

I answered immediately.

“What?””

His voice was shaking.

“Emily, where are you?””

“At the hospital.””

A pause.

Then:

“Is your mother awake?””

“Yes.””

Silence.

Then my father whispered:

“Don’t let her tell you everything.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

Another pause.

“Because she’s hiding the reason she disappeared.””

I looked at my mother.

She was watching me.

May you like

And from the look on her face…

She knew exactly what my father had just said.
