Chapter 5: The Man Who Planned My Fall

The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

Not because I was rested.

Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same thing.

Brandon pushing me.

The laughter.

Vanessa’s smile.

The way everyone watched.

But the worst part wasn’t the pool.

It wasn’t the money.

It wasn’t even the betrayal.

It was realizing that the person sleeping beside me for ten years had been living with a plan.

A plan where I was never supposed to know the truth.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

*You need to see what Brandon did before you destroy him.*

I stared at the screen.

Normally, I would have ignored it.

But nothing about my life was normal anymore.

A second message arrived.

*Meet me at the old office. Alone.*

I immediately called my father.

No answer.

I called again.

Still nothing.

Against my better judgment, I drove there.

The old Hale Innovations office was a place I hadn’t visited in years.

It was where Brandon and I first celebrated after receiving the first major investment.

Back then, there was no luxury.

No expensive cars.

No private parties.

Just two desks, a broken coffee machine, and a dream.

I walked inside.

The lights were already on.

“Emily.””

I froze.

Olivia stepped out from behind the doorway.

My heart sank.

The woman who had once been my closest friend looked exhausted.

“You sent the message?””

She nodded.

“I didn’t know who else to call.””

I crossed my arms.

“Why should I trust you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I should have told you years ago.””

That answer hurt.

Because it was honest.

“Tell me everything.””

Olivia sat down.

“I started working for Brandon six years ago.””

“I know.””

“No, Emily. You don’t.””

She opened her laptop.

“When I joined the company, I thought Brandon was brilliant.””

She looked down.

“Then I started seeing things.””

“What things?””

“Fake reports. Hidden accounts. Private meetings.””

My stomach tightened.

“With Vanessa?””

Olivia nodded.

“But it wasn’t just Vanessa.””

She turned the laptop toward me.

A folder appeared.

Inside were hundreds of files.

I opened the first one.

My own name appeared.

*Emily Hayes Research Archive.*

I looked at Olivia.

“What is this?””

“Everything Brandon removed from the company records.””

My hands went cold.

“He kept copies?””

“He kept everything.””

“Why?””

Olivia hesitated.

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Of your mother.””

I stopped.

“My mother died eight years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then why would he be afraid of her?””

Olivia opened another file.

Inside was an email exchange.

Between Brandon and an attorney.

The date was three months after my mother’s death.

I read the first sentence.

*If Emily discovers what her mother left behind, the company is finished.*

I looked up.

“What did my mother leave behind?””

Olivia whispered:

“A controlling interest.””

I stared.

“But my father said the family trust had 75% voting rights.””

“He was talking about the company shares.””

Olivia clicked another file.

“This is different.””

A document appeared.

*Emily Hayes Personal Trust Agreement.*

My mother had created it before she died.

I read slowly.

If Hale Innovations ever became profitable, ownership rights would transfer back to the original creator.

Me.

My hands shook.

“Brandon knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did he marry me?””

Olivia looked away.

That silence answered the question before she spoke.

“Because he needed access.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just a quiet crack.

Ten years.

Ten years of believing I had a marriage.

When maybe I had been part of a business strategy.

I closed the laptop.

“Why are you helping me now?””

Olivia’s face changed.

“Because Vanessa tried to destroy me.””

“What?””

“She found out I had evidence.””

I frowned.

“She threatened me.””

“When?””

“Two weeks ago.””

The room went silent.

Two weeks.

That meant this plan started before the anniversary party.

Before the pool.

Before I knew anything.

“What was Brandon planning?””

Olivia looked terrified.

“He wasn’t just going to take the company.””

“Then what?””

She opened one final file.

The name on the document made my blood freeze.

*Divorce Settlement Proposal.*

I read the first line.

Then the second.

And finally understood.

Brandon wasn’t planning to leave me after stealing everything.

He was planning to make it look like I had stolen from him.

“He was going to accuse you of fraud,” Olivia whispered.

I stared at the papers.

“He was going to destroy my reputation.””

“Yes.””

I slowly closed the folder.

Then my phone rang.

This time, it was my father.

I answered immediately.

“Dad?””

His voice was urgent.

“Emily, where are you?””

“The old office.””

A pause.

Then:

“Leave.””

I stood.

“What?””

“Leave right now.””

“Why?””

His voice dropped.

“Because Brandon isn’t coming after the company anymore.””

I felt a chill.

“What is he coming after?””

My father took a breath.

May you like

Then said:

“You.””
