Chapter 12: The Truth Neither of Them Wanted Me to Know

I ended the call slowly.

My mother looked away.

That hurt more than anger.

Because she didn’t deny it.

“You knew he would say that.””

She was quiet.

“Mom.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was hoping I wouldn’t have to tell you this.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Tell me.””

She looked at me.

“Your father wasn’t the person I was running from.””

I waited.

“He was the person I was running to.””

The words confused me.

“What?””

“When I discovered what Victor Hale was planning, I needed someone I trusted.””

“My father.””

“Yes.””

“Then why does he look guilty?””

“Because he is.””

I sat down.

Everything was becoming impossible to understand.

“Mom, please.””

She took a deep breath.

“Your father made one terrible mistake.””

“What?””

“He trusted the wrong person.””

“Thomas?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Brandon?””

“No.””

My stomach sank.

“Then who?””

She looked at me.

“Me.””

I stared.

“What?””

“I made a decision that started everything.””

The room went silent.

“Eight years ago, I discovered that Victor wanted to take the company. I could have exposed him.””

“Why didn’t you?””

“Because I found out something about you.””

“Me?””

She nodded.

“Your inheritance wasn’t just money.””

I frowned.

“What was it?””

“The patents.””

I froze.

“The original patents were tied to your identity.””

I thought about the documents.

My name.

My signature.

My work.

“Why?””

“Because your grandfather wanted to protect his granddaughter.””

I swallowed.

“So Victor couldn’t take them.””

“Yes.””

My mother looked down.

“But there was one problem.””

“What?””

“Someone had already accessed them.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

I already knew.

“Brandon.””

She nodded.

“He found out before you did.””

I closed my eyes.

Ten years.

Ten years of being married to someone who knew exactly who I was.

And chose to use me anyway.

My mother continued.

“Your father and I created a plan.””

“To expose him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did everything happen?””

“Because someone betrayed us.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“Your father.””

My heart sank again.

“He changed the plan.””

“Why?””

“Because he thought he could control Brandon.””

I stood.

“He gambled with my life.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was painful.

“He thought he was protecting the family.””

I shook my head.

“He protected everyone except me.””

My mother began crying.

“You’re right.””

For the first time, I saw her as human.

Not a victim.

Not a mystery.

A person who made mistakes.

“I need to know everything.””

She nodded.

“Then you need to know what happened the night I disappeared.””

I waited.

“Brandon was there.””

My breath caught.

“He was?””

“Yes.””

“What did he do?””

My mother looked at the door.

Then back at me.

“He saved my life.””

I froze.

That was the one answer I never expected.

“Brandon?””

“Yes.””

I couldn’t understand.

“The same man who destroyed me?””

She nodded.

“Because Brandon was never completely loyal to Victor.””

I whispered:

“Then why?””

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of Victor?””

“No.””

My mother looked at me.

“Of what Victor would do if Brandon ever tried to leave.””

A knock interrupted us.

The hospital door opened.

My father stepped inside.

He looked at my mother.

Then at me.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, he said:

“I think it’s time Emily knows the final truth.””

My mother looked terrified.

“What truth?””

My father took a folder from his coat.

Placed it on the table.

“The reason Brandon pushed you into that pool.””

I stared.

“What?””

My father opened the folder.

Inside was a single document.

A contract.

Signed two days before my anniversary party.

My name.

Brandon’s name.

And one final condition.

My father looked at me.

“He wasn’t trying to humiliate you.””

I looked at the contract.

“Then what was he trying to do?””

My father’s voice was barely a whisper.

“He was trying to force you to activate the trust.””

I looked up.

“Why?””

My father turned the document around.

The final line was visible.

*Upon Emily Hayes declaring separation from Brandon Hale, all protected assets will transfer immediately to the controlling beneficiary.*

I stared.

Because suddenly, the pool wasn’t the beginning.

It was the final move in a plan that had started years ago.

May you like

And Brandon had never been trying to destroy me.

He had been trying to make me leave him first.
