Chapter 3: The Person I Never Suspected

I didn’t speak.

For five seconds, neither did Brandon.

And in those five seconds, my mind searched through every person who could have betrayed him.

Every employee.

Every investor.

Every friend.

But one name never entered my thoughts.

Because I trusted her.

“Who is standing next to you?”” I asked.

Brandon laughed quietly.

Not his confident laugh.

A nervous one.

“You really have no idea, do you?””

“Brandon.””

“You should ask your father.””

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

My father noticed immediately.

“What happened?””

I placed the phone on the table.

“He said someone gave you the documents.””

My father’s expression didn’t change.

“That’s true.””

“Who?””

He looked at me carefully.

“Are you sure you want to know?””

That question scared me more than the answer.

Because my father had never hesitated with me.

Not once.

“Dad.””

He reached into his briefcase and pulled out another envelope.

“I didn’t want to tell you last night because you were already hurt.””

I opened it.

Inside was a printed email.

The sender’s name was visible at the top.

My hands froze.

It was from Olivia Bennett.

My husband’s longtime assistant.

And my closest friend.

I looked up.

“No.””

My father said nothing.

“No. Olivia wouldn’t.””

“Emily.””

“She was at our wedding.””

“I know.””

“She helped me pick my dress.””

“I know.””

“She stayed with me when my mother died.””

My father reached across the table.

“People can love parts of you and still betray you.””

I looked back at the email.

Olivia had discovered the forged documents.

She had found the secret accounts.

And instead of hiding the truth, she had sent everything to my father.

I read the final line again.

“I’m sorry it took me this long. I was afraid of what Brandon would do.””

I closed my eyes.

Afraid.

That word explained everything.

Because Brandon wasn’t just cruel when people challenged him.

He was dangerous when he felt cornered.

That afternoon, my father called an emergency board meeting.

Brandon arrived twenty minutes late.

He walked into the room wearing the same expensive suit he had worn the night before.

But the arrogance was gone.

Everyone was watching him.

He looked at me.

“Emily, we can fix this privately.””

I said nothing.

He sat down.

My father opened the meeting.

“Brandon Hale is accused of unauthorized financial transfers, document forgery, and breach of fiduciary responsibility.””

Brandon leaned back.

“You’re making a mistake.””

My father looked at him.

“No.””

Brandon smiled slightly.

“You think you can remove me because you have voting power?””

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

He looked at me.

“I’m saying your father isn’t the only person who has been preparing.””

The room went silent.

Brandon placed a folder on the table.

“I knew this day might come.””

My heart sank.

“What is that?””

He pushed it toward the board.

“Documents showing Emily’s involvement in company decisions.””

I opened the folder.

My own signatures stared back at me.

Except I knew immediately.

Some were real.

Some were not.

Brandon smiled.

“Looks like we both have problems.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then the conference room door opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stepped inside.

A woman I never expected to see.

She looked directly at me.

Then at Brandon.

And said:

“Before anyone makes a decision, there’s something you all need to know.””

Brandon’s face changed.

Because he recognized her.

But I didn’t understand why.

Until she placed a file on the table.

And said my name.

“Emily, your husband has been hiding the truth about how this company was really created.””

I looked at the file.

The first page had a date.

A date from before Brandon and I ever met.

And underneath it was a name.

May you like

My name.

With a signature I had never seen before.
