Chapter 9: The Place Where It Started

The old house sat empty at the end of a quiet street.

I hadn’t been there in years.

Not since Michael convinced me we needed a “fresh start.””

At the time, I thought he was talking about our future.

Now I wondered if he was talking about erasing my past.

My father parked outside.

“You don’t have to go in.””

I looked at the old wooden door.

“Yes, I do.””

Because somewhere inside that house was the truth.

And I was tired of being afraid of it.

The lock was old.

The key Rachel gave me turned slowly.

The door opened with a long creak.

Dust covered everything.

The furniture.

The windows.

The memories.

I walked inside.

And immediately felt something strange.

Michael had been here.

I knew it.

Not because I had proof.

Because I knew him.

He always left signs.

Small things.

Things most people wouldn’t notice.

A moved object.

A door slightly open.

A picture turned the wrong way.

My father followed me inside.

“Where would someone hide something?””

I looked around.

Then I remembered.

My old bedroom.

The place where Michael first told me he loved me.

I walked upstairs.

The floorboards creaked beneath my feet.

Inside the closet was an old wooden box.

I hadn’t opened it since moving.

Inside were letters.

Photographs.

Old journals.

And underneath everything…

A hidden compartment.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a small hard drive.

My father stared.

“What is that?””

“I don’t know.””

But I did.

Some part of me already knew.

We took it to Laura.

She connected it to a secure computer.

The files appeared one by one.

Names.

Dates.

Photos.

Records.

My stomach turned.

Michael had been tracking everything.

Every woman.

Every relationship.

Every financial detail.

Laura opened one folder.

Then stopped.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Emma…”

“What?””

She turned the screen toward me.

The folder was labeled:

*CARTER PROJECT*

My hands went numb.

Inside were documents dated before I met Michael.

My information.

My family history.

My father’s business.

My finances.

Everything.

“He researched you before you met him,” Laura whispered.

I couldn’t move.

“No.””

She opened another file.

A photograph appeared.

A picture of me.

Taken from across a coffee shop.

Before our first date.

Before I even knew his name.

My father stepped back.

“He was watching her.””

Laura nodded.

“This wasn’t random.””

I stared at the screen.

All the questions.

All the confusion.

Everything finally connected.

Michael hadn’t met me by accident.

He had chosen me.

But not because he loved me.

Because he wanted something from me.

Then another file opened automatically.

A video.

The date was eight years earlier.

The day before Michael proposed.

I pressed play.

His voice filled the room.

“Everything is ready.””

I froze.

It was Michael.

Younger.

Smiling.

Confident.

Then another voice answered.

A woman’s voice.

A voice I recognized.

My blood turned cold.

Because the woman in the recording said:

“Once you marry Emma, you’ll finally have access to everything.””

I looked at Laura.

Then at my father.

Neither of them spoke.

Because we all knew.

Michael had not planned this alone.

And whoever was helping him had been beside us from the very beginning.
