Chapter 7: The Reason He Chose Me

I listened to Michael’s voicemail again.

Then again.

Each time, I waited for the missing words.

The reason.

The reason he married me.

The reason he stayed.

The reason he built an entire life with me.

But the message ended before he gave me the answer.

And somehow, that was worse.

Because my mind started creating possibilities.

Terrible ones.

On the drive home, Vanessa’s words replayed over and over.

“He wasn’t supposed to marry you.””

Eight years.

Eight years of birthdays.

Christmas mornings.

Family vacations.

Late-night conversations.

Had all of it been a performance?

When I arrived home, my father was waiting in the driveway.

The moment he saw my face, he knew something was wrong.

“What did she tell you?””

I handed him the envelope.

He looked through the photographs.

His jaw tightened with every picture.

“Emma…”

“I married a stranger.””

My father looked up.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Yes.””

He stepped closer.

“You married someone who lied to you. That’s different.””

I wanted to believe him.

But the truth felt heavier than anything I had carried before.

Inside the house, Sophie ran toward me.

“Mommy!””

I dropped down and hugged her.

She held onto me tightly.

“I made you a picture.””

She handed me a drawing.

It was our family.

Me.

Sophie.

Grandpa.

And a small figure of Michael standing far away.

I stared at it.

“You drew Daddy over there?””

She nodded.

“Because I don’t know where he belongs now.””

My heart cracked.

I pulled her close.

“You don’t have to figure that out today.””

That night, after Sophie fell asleep, I sat at the kitchen table with every document Laura had given me.

I needed answers.

Not feelings.

Not memories.

Facts.

Around midnight, I found something.

A bank transfer.

From the year before we got married.

The account number was unfamiliar.

But the name attached to it wasn’t.

Michael Carter.

My hands froze.

Because the transfer was made three months before he proposed.

I called Laura immediately.

She answered after one ring.

“Emma?””

“I found something.””

I read her the information.

There was silence.

Then she said:

“Don’t touch anything else.””

“Why?””

“Because if this is connected to what I think it is, Michael may have been preparing this much longer than we realized.””

I looked around my house.

The walls.

The photographs.

The life I built.

Suddenly everything felt like evidence.

The next morning, Laura came over with a detective.

They reviewed the documents.

Then the detective looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, there’s something you should know.””

I sat down.

“What?””

He placed a file on the table.

“This investigation found records connected to another woman.””

My stomach tightened.

“Another victim?””

He nodded.

“But she disappeared before we could get a statement.””

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

My father looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

The detective opened the file.

“Her name was Rachel Moore.””

The name meant nothing to me.

Until he turned the page.

And I saw the photograph.

A young woman.

Standing beside Michael.

The same smile.

The same pose.

The same way he used to hold me.

I felt sick.

“When was this taken?””

The detective looked at the date.

“Seven years ago.””

Seven years ago.

One year after Michael and I married.

Before Sophie started school.

Before I ever suspected anything.

I stared at the picture.

Then I noticed something.

A ring.

On Rachel’s finger.

A ring I recognized.

Because I had seen it before.

On Michael’s hand.

The detective watched my expression.

“You know something?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because suddenly I understood.

Rachel wasn’t just another woman.

She was connected to the one thing Michael had never explained.

The night he told me his past was “complicated.””

The night he refused to talk about his first engagement.

I looked at my father.

“He told me he had never been married before.””

The room went silent.

Because now we knew.

Michael wasn’t just hiding money.

May you like

He wasn’t just hiding another woman.

He was hiding an entire life.
