Chapter 11: The Friend Who Sold My Future

I didn’t sleep.

I couldn’t.

Every memory involving Karen replayed in my head.

The coffee dates.

The secrets.

The conversations about my marriage.

Every time I complained about Michael, she listened.

Every time I questioned him, she defended him.

Now I understood why.

She wasn’t calming my fears.

She was protecting her investment.

The next morning, Karen agreed to meet.

My father wanted to come.

I said no.

Not because I trusted her.

Because I needed to hear the truth myself.

We met in a quiet park.

Karen looked nothing like the woman I knew.

Her eyes were tired.

Her hands shook.

“Emma.””

I stayed standing.

“Tell me everything.””

She looked down.

“I met Michael before you did.””

I felt a familiar pain.

“How?””

“Through work.””

“And?””

Karen swallowed.

“He told me he was looking for someone.””

The way she said it made my stomach turn.

“Someone?””

“Someone stable.””

I stared at her.

“He was searching.””

“Yes.””

“For a wife?””

She nodded.

“For a target.””

The word hurt.

Because it was the truth.

“Why me?””

Karen looked away.

“Because you were kind.””

I almost laughed.

“Kind?””

“Yes.””

“That’s why?””

“You trusted people.””

I felt tears burn my eyes.

“I was your friend.””

“I know.””

“Then how could you?””

Karen started crying.

“I was desperate.””

There it was.

The excuse.

The reason people used when they knew they had done something wrong.

“Desperate for what?””

She hesitated.

“Money.””

I looked at her.

“How much?””

“Enough to pay my debts.””

I felt numb.

“So you sold me.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice became sharper.

“You gave a man information about me.””

Karen wiped her tears.

“I didn’t know how bad he was.””

“You knew enough.””

She looked down.

“I gave him your habits.””

My chest tightened.

“What habits?””

“When you went to work.””

“When Sophie had appointments.””

“When your father was out of town.””

Every word felt like another wound.

“You helped him study me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Karen whispered:

“Because Michael promised he would leave you alone after he got what he wanted.””

I stared at her.

“And you believed him?””

“I thought I knew him.””

“You didn’t.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I didn’t.””

For the first time, I saw something real in her face.

Regret.

But regret didn’t erase damage.

It didn’t erase fear.

It didn’t erase my daughter watching her father hurt me.

“What does he want now?””

Karen looked up.

And the fear returned.

“He knows you found the files.””

“How?””

“Because he has a backup plan.””

My heart sank.

“What backup plan?””

Karen reached into her bag.

She pulled out an envelope.

“He told me if anything went wrong, I needed to give this to him.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why do you have it?””

“Because I never gave it to him.””

She pushed it toward me.

“Emma, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Michael doesn’t lose.””

I stared at her.

“He always has another move.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single document.

A legal agreement.

My name was printed at the top.

But the date was impossible.

Because it was signed three days before I met Michael.

My blood ran cold.

“That’s not my signature.””

Karen nodded.

“I know.””

I looked at her.

“What is this?””

Her voice dropped.

“The document that proves Michael planned your entire marriage.””

I turned the page.

At the bottom was another signature.

Not Michael’s.

Not mine.

Someone else’s.

Someone who had authorized everything.

May you like

And when I saw the name, I forgot how to breathe.

Because it belonged to someone in my own family.
