Chapter 14: The Place Where The Truth Waited

The old house looked different at night.

The broken fence.

The dark windows.

The empty rooms.

Everything felt like a memory that had turned rotten.

The police surrounded the property before we entered.

My father stayed beside me.

“You don’t have to do this.””

I looked at the house.

“Yes, I do.””

Because Michael had taken enough from me.

My confidence.

My trust.

My sense of safety.

I wasn’t giving him my fear too.

The front door was already open.

That was wrong.

Michael never left anything open.

Not unless he wanted someone to enter.

We stepped inside.

“Michael!””

No answer.

The detective raised a hand.

Everyone stopped.

Then we heard it.

A voice upstairs.

“Emma.””

My blood froze.

He was waiting.

I started walking.

My father grabbed my shoulder.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“He wants me.””

“He wants control.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

The detective followed behind me.

We reached the upstairs hallway.

The bedroom door was open.

Inside, Michael stood near the window.

He looked tired.

But calm.

Almost like we were meeting for coffee.

“You came.””

I stared at him.

“You knew I would.””

“Yes.””

He smiled faintly.

“Because I know you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You knew who you wanted me to be.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

A small crack.

“You were supposed to understand me.””

“I did.””

I looked at him.

“That was the problem.””

Michael stepped closer.

The detective immediately moved forward.

“Stay where you are.””

Michael stopped.

Then laughed.

“You think a badge changes anything?””

“No.””

I answered before the detective could.

“But the truth does.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He looked around the room.

“This was where I planned everything.””

I felt sick.

“You’re proud of that?””

“No.””

He looked almost disappointed.

“I’m proud that it worked.””

The words were worse than I expected.

He continued.

“You were perfect.””

I stared at him.

“A person.””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“A life I could build around.””

The detective watched him carefully.

“Why Emma?””

Michael smiled.

“Because she had everything.””

My stomach turned.

“Money?””

“Stability.””

He looked at me.

“Trust.””

I said nothing.

“And something I never had.””

“What?””

“A family.””

The room went quiet.

For one moment, I saw something human in him.

Then it disappeared.

“I thought if I built one, I would finally feel like I belonged.””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t want a family.””

My voice became stronger.

“You wanted ownership.””

Michael looked away.

And that was the first time I knew I had reached him.

Not emotionally.

Not with guilt.

With truth.

The detective stepped forward.

“Michael Carter, you are under arrest.””

Michael didn’t fight.

That scared me.

He simply looked at me.

“You still don’t know everything.””

I froze.

“What?””

He smiled.

“The files.””

My heart dropped.

“What about them?””

“There’s one file you didn’t open.””

The detective looked at him.

“Stop talking.””

But Michael kept going.

“It explains why your father really signed.””

My father stiffened.

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

Michael smiled.

“Ask him what happened before I met you.””

The officers took Michael away.

But I stayed frozen.

May you like

Because once again, Michael had left me with a question.

And this time, the answer involved my father.
