Chapter 6: The Truth Before The Marriage

I read the message ten times.

Before I married him.

Those words stayed in my head.

Because I had always believed Michael’s secrets started after we became a family.

I was wrong.

Maybe the secret was there from the beginning.

My father found me sitting on the couch with my phone in my hand.

“What happened?””

I showed him.

His face darkened.

“He’s trying to scare you.””

“Is it working?””

My father sat beside me.

“Are you scared?””

I looked toward the hallway where Sophie was sleeping.

“Yes.””

I didn’t pretend anymore.

“I’m scared because I don’t know how much I don’t know.””

The next morning, Laura helped us find Vanessa Hill.

She wasn’t hiding.

She was living two hours away in a small apartment.

But she refused to meet us at first.

“She’s afraid,” Laura explained.

“Of Michael?””

Laura hesitated.

“Yes.””

That answer told me everything.

People weren’t afraid of innocent men.

By the afternoon, Vanessa agreed to talk.

She sat across from me at a quiet café.

She looked exhausted.

Older than the woman in the photograph.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

I stared at her.

“For what?””

“For helping him.””

The words hit immediately.

“You helped him?””

She looked down.

“At first, I didn’t know what he was doing.””

“But later?””

She closed her eyes.

“Later, I knew.””

I felt anger rise in my chest.

“You watched him destroy my life.””

“I tried to stop him.””

“When?””

“When I realized you were not just another name on a document.””

My hands shook.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Michael has done this before.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

“Done what?””

“Married women.””

I froze.

She continued.

“Not many. But enough.””

My mind struggled to process it.

“No.””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“He finds someone stable. Someone trusting. Someone who has assets or family support.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

She reached into her bag.

And placed a small envelope on the table.

Inside were photographs.

Different women.

Different years.

Different cities.

But the same man.

Michael.

My husband.

My hands covered my mouth.

“How did I not know?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Because he’s good at making people feel chosen.””

That sentence hurt because it was true.

Michael had made me feel like I was the only person in the world who understood him.

The only one he needed.

The only one he loved.

Vanessa continued.

“He wasn’t supposed to marry you.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“He had another plan.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“What plan?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“He was going to leave you after he transferred everything into his name.””

I stared at her.

“But why stay?””

Vanessa’s face became pale.

“Because something changed.””

“What?””

She looked directly at me.

“You got pregnant.””

My stomach dropped.

“Sophie?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Michael told me the baby complicated everything.””

I felt sick.

The man who hugged our daughter every night.

The man who called her his princess.

Had once seen her as a problem.

I stood up.

I couldn’t breathe.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

Vanessa looked toward the window.

“Because Michael isn’t trying to get revenge.””

“Then what is he doing?””

Her voice dropped.

“He’s trying to finish what he started eight years ago.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Michael.

I stared at the screen.

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Don’t answer.””

I didn’t move.

Then a voicemail notification appeared.

I pressed play.

Michael’s voice filled the café.

“Emma, I know you’re with Vanessa.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

His voice continued.

“You always did trust the wrong people.””

A pause.

Then he whispered:

“But if you want to know why I really married you…”

The message cut off.

I stared at the phone.

May you like

Because Michael had left the most important part unsaid.

And somehow, I knew the next truth would hurt more than everything before.
